I hope you didn't let the cat go? Otherwise rabies shots might be needed. You might want to call your local Health Department.

Like stated above, contact the local health dept. and ask for their protocol in a situation like this. If it was my son, I would do my best to capture that cat, for either quarantine or euthanization for rabies testing. I would also get him to your family physician, t have the wound treated to prevent infection. Feral cat bites are nasty and often get infected. If the cat could not be captured, I would give a serious thought to post exposure rabies shots. I tend to be heavy on the side of caution in situations like this and don't take them lightly. With rabies you don't get a second chance.

If shooting is an option, make sure not to shoot the head. Just a bit of advice.

Unless you have the cat, Rabies shots for sure! It's nothing to mess around with. It's pretty much 100% lethal once it gets a foothold and preventable with shots. A no brainer.

DO NOT SHOOT IT IN THE HEAD! The lab need the intact brain for the test. Likely it NO rabid, just a whizzed off semi feral Cat, however don't wait too long to get the post exposure shots. This is a serious situation.

Shots are not as bad as they used to be either. Not a big deal pain wise. Dollar wise, it depends on insurance.

Most cat bites become infected. Cat scratches and bites, if not treated, can be fatal. Your son should be put on a preventative round of antibiotics, whether the doctors decide to treat for rabies or not.

There are much safer, better ways to deal with feral cats

Don't confuse feral cat with farm cat. Many farmers have farm cats. A feral cat can be dealt with in certain ways, a farmers cat needs to be treated differently. I hope boy gets the shots to ease the mind, prayers sent.

Per Yahoo news: A man in Utah just died from Rabies, first in 70 years.

Any time you have an encounter with a cat when the skin in broken or you are bleeding, get it treated right away EVEN if is your house cat. I had a friend and his house cat bit him and drew blood, 12 hours he was in the hospital and was one sick cookie. This is no BS.

Horse hockey! Treat all cats found outside the same, SSS.
