I am hunting a new farm that is on river bottoms all in soybeans. One field is 87 acres. I killed this deer at 317 yards off handed as I was walking around checking trail cams. I was lucky enough that he came out in front of the cam I was going to check. I know this is not a far shot but I normally find the thickest mess to hunt. Not the one I wanted but with non-stop rain sleet and snow for the next 7 days I am glad to be done. Time on cam is set before time went back . Real time was 5.06

I hit him a little far forward and as he tried to get back up I creased him across the neck . Then I put another round thru him to finish him

I would have had to get a rest. When hunting out West or up North, I carry a shooting stick. In Pa., most deer are shot between 50-100 yards....I can make that shot.

I sometimes carry shooting sticks but was planning on staying put in the tree until dark. But 23 degrees and 15-20 mph winds in my ear froze me out. LOL I was headed to the truck and pulling cards from my cams

Decent buck but shooting off hand without a rest is a crapshoot at that range. Something a young Hunter would do.
You got real lucky!!!!

LOL I was born in 1963 so young no. But I have been shooting rifles of every kind since I was 6 . Take pride in my ability to shoot. For decades I would get calls from farmers to get rid of their ground hog problems. (yotes are doing that now) We used to drive around EVERY week end during the summer in a 1978 jeep C-J 5 Golden eagle and shoot whistle pigs. Since then I try to keep in practice. I also sight in rifles each year for people around my town and even some out of state.
As for shooting off handed do it every year . Don't need or want shooting rail on my ladder stands. Have killed deer out to 250 before but never over 300. The one and only secret to shooting off handed is to take your time and time your trigger pull to happen as you pass over the animals vitals. TRUST ME ALL PEOPLE will wobble off handed with any rifle. Practice and timing are the key.
With that said did I get lucky ? Maybe. But seem to find a way to get lucky every year.................

People who shoot off hand at those kinds of ranges usually only tell about the kills and not the hit but not recovered critters. You have a practiced and enviable skill.

You sound like a great and experienced shooter. Thanks for sharing. Too bad the negative Nancy's are coming out for you. Must be jealous of your skills.

Nice shooting. My best off hand is somewhere around 250.

Off the bench is 597.

I did get lucky one time with a 20 gauge slug gun. 105 and it dropped where it stood. Ofcourse I didn't hit where I thought it would, but meat is meat.

Nice buck. I prefer to have long or complicated shots. Nothing like a 4 foot raise and a twenty foot lead.
