I've been trying to catch some otter on private pond I just acquired couple weeks ago. I've got one trap set on crossover and 2 what I call modified pocket sets. They are just cut in bank with salted bluegill then bank pushed back down on them. Can't set 220s on land or dirtholes because landowner has 2 bulldogs I don't want to catch. Any ideas on what to look for or where to begin? My thoughts are looking for an old beaver den somewhere in the pond. Then also once river goes down, which is right on edge of his property, look there for any other places to set. So am I heading in right direction? Also any pointers on how to go about it?

Old bank dens are good places for otter.

Find an active beaver pond, trap the beavers out then set some dam breaks or other natural pinch points for the travelling otter. It could take a while before you connect since otters roam widely. But if they went thru once you can bet they or others will use the drainage again.Beaver habitat is otter habitat,so get rid of the beavers first with beaver sets so they wont bugger up your otter sets at the time the otter go thru.

What Boco said, and you may actually get the otters during the beaver thinning process......at least I have a few times.

Claudie Taylors DVD is awesome and sounds like you should ask for it as an early Christmas present!
Here's Claudie with part of his '06 catch ...180 this pic.

You have to be very patient with otter. It may be a while before they return.

For me- Blind sets out produce baited pocket sets by far, the crossovers you set are great spots. Otters seem to be inquisitive about castor mound sets and I have taken many focusing on Beaver as mentioned above.

I know you can't set dry land but the otters travel route Is from the pond to the river. I doubt that the otter Is living In the pond.
Find the take out point on the river bank and set It up with a body grip. Or you could snare that otter some where between the pond and the river.

Or tell the land owner to keep his dogs locked up for awhile. If he wants the otter gone then that shouldn't be a problem.

I've found a couple of spots where they were coming out of the river. Matter of fact I was setting bodygrips up when I seen them. Landowner was gone for the holiday weekend so I was able to set them. Never was able to connect and now we have had a bunch of rain, so I pulled them instead of losing them. When river starts to go back down I'm going to reset and go from there.

Good luck.

You may think before you act. The question is did you listen to your own council?

High water is a big problem for many eastern trappers this year!

Well they moved last night. Found fresh scat 10 ft from one of my modified pocket sets! Now if I could just get lucky that would make this old man's day. Hey, what's that at the end of my slide wire? No couldn't be. Wait it looks long slender and brown. YES! I HAVE AN OTTER!!!

Good job on the otter. Also I support the recommendations for Claudie Taylor's dvd.

Thanks guys, now to try and catch more. I talked to landowner yesterday and showed him where I would like to set trails up. Wanted to make sure his dogs don't go back that far. He told me I'd be good to go so time to carpet bomb trails with 220s and wait and see what happens.
