What's your take on Savage firearms? I've never owned one or shot one. They seem to be priced around Ruger's. What's the quality and are they good shooters?

In the 80's and 90's the Savages were ugly and heavy but dang did they shoot well! The new ones I can't speak to but we sold lots of them 30 years ago.
I have nothing clever to put here.

I think most of them shoot great, they have great barrels, and are hard to beat at their price point. Ive customized some savage axis' that are one hole guns now. I do think the new magazines suck however.

Yup, my Niece will be buying it and she doesn't have a lot of money. It will be her first rifle and here in PA I figure a .243 would be a good all around rifle for deer and varmints. I'm a Ruger man myself but I have not heard very good things about the quality of the Ruger American. That's about her price range since she will probably want glass also. These Savages keep popping up as I'm looking so I'm giving it some serious consideration. We will have to go shopping and compare them side by side but I need to know what to look at.

I own 2 savages . One in 22 mag and an axis in 270. THEY WILL FLAT OUT SHOOT.!!!!!!!!! Right out of the box one of the BEST production rifles out there. This is 3 shot group at 227 yards out of an axis 270. 130 gr Federal factory ammo Careful now, some people on here get upset if you shoot further than you can throw a rock.

I had a 22-250, 223, & 30-06 in the cheap Savage models. All three were real tack drivers. IMO, best rifle on the market for the money.

My uncle is a metallurgist and tests a lot of Savage's parts and components. His take is they have higher tolerances and better quality material than most other firearms manufacturers that contract to his company.
They are not pretty but certainly have a reputation of being the best shooting production line rifles out of the box. I have a 110C chambered in .243 and it shoots like a champ. All factory loads from 80 grain to 120 grain shoot the same out of it. The 110 series and its clones probably the best out of the box value currently out there. Style wise I'm not a huge fan but they more than make up for that in the ease of barrel change for the average guy.

I have a little Savage 64 semi auto .22LR and I love it. As said above, they do have issues with the factory mags but at the price point, how does one complain? Once I found ammo that mine agreed with it functions flawlessly.
Just happy to be here.

I use nothing but Savage rifles, like someone said they shoot great right out of the box. I also like the accu triggers on them I can lighten them up myself. I have a 270, 17 hornet and 223 all shoot great even with reloads.

Savage 110 is a great accurate rifle.I own one in 30 06 that has accounted for lots of bears. Another rifle I really like is the CZ.

I have a savage .17 hmr, brand new it wouldn't extract a spent shell. Contacted the factory and they sent me a replacement extractor, that didn't fix the issue. Contacted them again and they told me to ship it back and they would look. I sent it back and they fixed the issue no questions, I was displeased by their lack of quality (they should have seen this issue on the test fire) but their customer service was fantastic.
It's a trappers life for me

Trying to follow here is futile lol. Well, she is all worried about recoil. I've let her shoot my .308, 30-30, 30-06 and even a 7.62X39. All of them ended up with whining. I figure a .243 will do the job on bambi at 200 yards which probably will never happen in PA. It will be 100 or under. Also, if she want's to shoot ground hogs or yotes or something like that, a lighter bullet will work out well. For PA, for a girl, it seems like the perfect caliber. As far as looking, I've just been looking online for starters. She will have to go to a gun shop to see how it "fits" and I can get an eye on the craftsmanship. But I want some good ideas in mind first as far as model. I would really like her to get a Model 70, something that she could had down to her kids but at this point, she doesn't have that kind of loot.

This is just my opinion but if she dont have a lot of money to spend I will go with the Thompson center cumpus. If she had some money to spend I would buy a better quality salvage like a 110. The axis are ok guns but I think the other savages are way better. All very true and you can build off of the 110 models as good or better then the 700s or model 70s
There is a very fine line between "hobby" and "mental illness

Don't over look reduced loads, choice bullets, less recoil, and the force stops on target. With carbide neck sizer dies, long case life = more practice and fun.

Trappercass there is a way to lighten the trigger pull on those Axis’s I did it to a 243 I used to have. It’s actually on you tube, you take the trigger mechanism apart and cut 1 1/2 coil off the spring. Then put back together, the more you pull that trigger the more lighter it gets.

I just bought a Savage Axis in a 22-250. First Savage I ever owned. Looks and feels like it might make a good gun to shoot. Mite put a good scope on it but am kinda leaning on setting it up with night vision or thermal scope for predator calling at nite. But have to win the lottery first.....oh, but then I would have to start buying tickets!!!

Since it is for a young person I wouldn't mess with the trigger. If you need it done let a gunsmith do it. I am fine with the 270 I have. If you worked on it and something tragic happened to your young hunter it would be bad There is nothing wrong with the method I said to do it’s completely safe.

If you buy one of the package preboresighted deals make sure to take the scope off and tighten everything up. We have found that many times they are loose.

I love my Savages however the Axis line disappointed me. Not bad guns but certainly not the traditional savage quality. That being said I would take most Savages over any other brand out there

I have a relation who is a ballistics expert for a national ammo manufacturer. They test every model and make out there. Years ago when Savage stepped it up he informed me that they were doing great things with accuracy and quality of steel used. So I started buying.
As a side note they do all sorts of tests on scopes as well including impact testing. Top scope for durability and accuracy is Weaver.
For what it's worth.

I had got a Savage model 24 of 22lr/410 in the late 80's . It was the first gun I bought and still have it and would not part from it. I have look into the newer ones of the Axis and did not like the way the mag was.It is like my Rem 700 in 22-250 and it did not work for what I wanted.

Have three Savages. Two restocked 110's and a 10LE bull barrel. Love the fully adjustable accuracy-trigger. Never more than one shot needed to kill with any of them yet so they are satisfactory to me.

I have a Savage 110 in .243, a Savage .17mag bullbarrel with accutrigger, a .270wsm with accutrigger, and bought my son a Savage axis 25.06 a cpl years ago. Reasonably priced tack drivers, every one I own is very accurate and not for sale lol.

Being left handed I have about 7 or so. They are all very accurate, less than 1" at 100 yards with most 1/2" or less. Not gonna win any beauty contests unless they are only judging the targets. No idea about the axis models only have 10/110, 11/111 and 12. Love the accutrigger.

I’ve got 2 Savage model 12 long range precision varminters, one in .223 Remington and the other is a 6 m/m bench rest and they shoot like they have eyes, they are both dual port actions.
