What's your take on Savage firearms? I've never owned one or shot one. They seem to be priced around Ruger's. What's the quality and are they good shooters?

In the 80's and 90's the Savages were ugly and heavy but dang did they shoot well! The new ones I can't speak to but we sold lots of them 30 years ago.
I have nothing clever to put here.

Have bought many. Upper styles. Darn good shooters out of the box.

I think most of them shoot great, they have great barrels, and are hard to beat at their price point. Ive customized some savage axis' that are one hole guns now. I do think the new magazines suck however.

Yup, my Niece will be buying it and she doesn't have a lot of money. It will be her first rifle and here in PA I figure a .243 would be a good all around rifle for deer and varmints. I'm a Ruger man myself but I have not heard very good things about the quality of the Ruger American. That's about her price range since she will probably want glass also. These Savages keep popping up as I'm looking so I'm giving it some serious consideration. We will have to go shopping and compare them side by side but I need to know what to look at.

I own 2 savages . One in 22 mag and an axis in 270. THEY WILL FLAT OUT SHOOT.!!!!!!!!! I had a 22-250, 223, & 30-06 in the cheap Savage models. All three were real tack drivers. IMO, best rifle on the market for the money.

Look at dunhams black Friday sales. Last year they had the axis for 199 plus 100 mail in rebate !!!

My uncle is a metallurgist and tests a lot of Savage's parts and components. His take is they have higher tolerances and better quality material than most other firearms manufacturers that contract to his company.
They are not pretty but certainly have a reputation of being the best shooting production line rifles out of the box. I have a 110C chambered in .243 and it shoots like a champ. All factory loads from 80 grain to 120 grain shoot the same out of it. The 110 series and its clones probably the best out of the box value currently out there. Style wise I'm not a huge fan but they more than make up for that in the ease of barrel change for the average guy.
