Whats the rule of thumb? One, two, three seasons before replacing? Mark Junes DVD talks about using fresh lure every year, wondering if that's marketing or not?

no need to replace every year....sounds like marketing to me. Ive caught fur on 20 year old lure. YMMV

I agree with Matt. I have some castor based lure that's 20 years old and still works fine.

Good news to here for me.

You may think before you act. The question is did you listen to your own council?

Rule of thumb is use til the bottle is empty, then use the bottle and the cap. Any lure that needs replacing in your (other than for total usage) lifetime was junk to start with and should not be purchased! Caveat emptor

I have 3 of Marks videos and I don't remember that. Which one says that?

I'd also bet that the context of "fresh" is not a new bottle of the same lure, but a different smell than you have been using. In line with that I try to log what I use on each Farm or Area, and will try to add something different during the season, and the next year. I don't think animals "learn" as much as they arent as curious about different smells, especially lures that are based on exotic scents. Food and Gland lures probably don't need the same "newness" factor, at least not in my experience.

This, I can’t imagine Mark saying to replace lure after only a year.

I’ve got some lure that is 5-6 years old and still smells good and I still use it. Mostly beaver lure though.

Happy trapping to you!

I have difficulty imagining the same animal being there after the first visit. But a change up lure with the change of season doesn't hurt.

He said it in the context of use good fresh lure, you don't want to be buying high dollar gas and using old lure. Its the first coyote trapping dvd towards the end. Kneeling at a set going over his lures in his tin bucket.

I have already filled one chest freezer with coyotes over the last 2 weeks from the loudest, many years old bait so don't believe everything you idolize or read.

He said it in the context of use good fresh lure,

How can lure be fresh? It takes months or years to make and more months or years to get through the supply chain.

I don't see a "born on date" or "best used by" date on any of my lure bottles. Not sure how long they have been from time they were botted up to shipping to the reseller to my house then sat on my self a few months before I actually applied it at a set, either.
I wouldn't replace if you have some left from previous season. Just use it all up and go have fun.

Money cannot buy you happiness, but it can buy you a trapping license and that's pretty close.

Let me clear this up for y'all;
I NEVER said replace lures with fresh???
I say that I use "fresh" lures as in the composition of the glands. "Fresh" vs. "Aged". I use fresh ground glands in my line of lures.
It takes months to formulate and yes there is a supply chain to consider some times. This is why I use a black poly seal cap vs. the cheaper metal caps. With a poly cap, there's no air that can seep in or out and the smells get locked in the bottle once it's tightened. The lure is golden (good) forever in a poly cap bottle. I have some from 1984 when we started that smell as good as the day they were bottled!

shortliner16, please watch that DVD again and you'll see I reference fresh glands, not fresh lures. There's no such thing as fresh lures.
Hope this helps....

Mark
