Not a lot a guy can do but tromp in and tromp out. I deal with it ever year and at times starts early and lasts all bow season and gun season. LOL Gun not so bad but I'm still bow hunting and fighting it also. I try to go a little sooner or the evening sit not sure that helps.
Give me a fish, I will eat for a day. Teach me to fish, I will eat for a lifetime

Pick days that are windy...dense cover also helps nock down some of the noise...
Thought I was a good trapper until I started trapping coyotes...... Thought I was a good bowhunter until I targeted mature bucks....

This is an old spot and stalk bow hunting trick but it works on all sorts of crunchy terrain. Put some socks over your boots ( they need to be nice heavy socks, or fluffy) it will deaden the sound a good deal.
That being said I agree with beltrami, I have noticed that most animals don't spook from the sound of foot steps ( it may make them pay attention to where you are coming from though) but if they wind you or see you...just wave bye bye.

Walk like the deer do. I believe Its the "cadence" or lack of that triggers the alarm system the strongest. They lay on hillsides and listen to noise all day , everyday. Or else they would allways be in flight. Question is what are you doing so different it causes instant flight. To be alarmed is ok , To create a flight reaction is not the goal.

walk with a big walking stick so it sounds like a 4 legged critter instead of a 2 legged critter.

I have hunted in the snow my entire life, and I hate sitting idle in a deer stand so I sneak/still hunt mostly and I am on the move all the time. From my experience the sound of you walking has very little effect on deer, but once they spot you or smell you its a different story. Deer are not the most quiet of creatures crunching through the snow either. I've been a track and stalk hunter all my life. Just the way I was taught to hunt and I cannot sit in a stand either.Just boring to me. Frozen leaves are just as bad as crusty snow. Most hunters move way to fast through the woods. You have to sneak and peek - glassing the woods ahead. It can take me 30 minutes to cover 150 yds. If I spot a deer, I pick my path to stay in line with trees and keep my eyes on the target, only moving when their head is down. The real challenge is when 2 or more are traveling together.
