So the wife says this year right before trapping opener, "I think I want to try trapping this year." Who am I to disregard such a notion? So we got her a trapping license and I made some mock sets with her behind the house to practice. Opener came and she put out some fox sets by the house and two other locations not far from our place. We have quite a few fox and that is to her advantage, but it is still fox and they are pressured around here. Last night we went to check her set by a creek that was baited with beaver scraps. Walking up we noticed the snow was knocked off all the knee high grass where the trap was set. We got up there as the light was fading fast. Sure enough the trap and spruce pole drag were gone. The drag marks paralleled the water and then went into the nearest brush. As we got closer to the brush the sound of a trap chain rang out. Patience paid off! A beautiful cherry red male was tangled and not going anywhere with a full front paw in the 1 1/2 coilspring. This morning she went by herself to check a few snares and a trap set in the furthest from the house location (2 miles). She came back with another even darker red male! It was caught using a mix of fox and mink fleshings/fat again in a 1 1/2 coil. The one on the lefts is from yesterday and on the right is today's. She got back and after taking pictures and hanging it up for the day, she started talking about more set locations. Update: After hanging for a day we skinned them. I did one and she did the other. Here is the one she put up. She's mine kind of woman!
