Overkill compared to the 2 coil? I love the MB 550 2 coil. So far I caught a number of coyotes with nice paw catches. As the weather gets colder, I am thinking of using 4 coil to break through the frozen soil. For you that use 4 coil 550’s, your thoughts on them.

I have em, but I’m new and I don’t have much to compare em too. They are very stought, I snapped my finger in one, unpleasant.

They are a lot harder to set and I consider them overkill but if that doesn't bother you,go for it.I use the two coils all the way through the toughest Montana Winters so I opt save the strain on my hands. The strongest traps I own will freeze down if I'm not diligent with freeze proofing methods.This. includes the 750 Wolf traps.

i bought a dozen and ended up pulling all the extra springs off. bugger to set, and all that tension almost seemed to warp the frames for me. i also trap all the way through south dakota winters, and the two cools are more than enough if your freeze proofing.

maybe I'm doing something wrong but if the ground is froze enough I would need 4 coils to spring through it then it is also frozen enough that the pan probably won't drop, and then it doesn't matter how many springs are on the trap anyways

I bought the four coil kits and did one . I took them back off , seemed like too much in my opinion .

The NEW 550 - 2 coils have very strong springs...and I am sure they are enough for freeze proofed dirt. That said...I 4 coiled all of mine so I will not have any issues in extreme conditions. Half the time I use a one hand setter, so setting them is not an issue.
