Picked this yote up the other day and all the hair is missing on the back side of one ear. Is this the onset of mange or something else?

Mangy dogs stink. Pretty much an unmistakable smell. Usually mange starts spotty, and it would be scabby.

Looks like a red fox?

Seen lots critters with mange. It's always started in the back end from what I've seen.

I don't think it is a battle wound, the ear itself is fine, no nicks or scars on the outter edge.

white 17, the rest of the yote was fine, the inside of the ear is fine to. Never seen this on a critter, kinda odd that it is on one ear. Maybe a parasite?

If that is the only spot on him, skin him. I have caught many like that that have black scars on them from having mange, and recovering from it. Many times they have those scars on their legs and feet also. Just caught one the other day just like that here in SD. Just cut that ear off when you board him, so no one can give ya any grief!
