Mine are all put up in one gallon clean milk jugs to be stashed near sets. I've never had waxed dirt mold before. Was there moisture left in the dirt? Should be bone dry when you start, then keep it dry and sealed to store. I've got some leftover from last year and its still fine am using it this season. Jim

Money cannot buy you happiness, but it can buy you a trapping license and that's pretty close.

30 -50 gallon barrels, no mold, some barrels 5 yrs old..... mold needs moisture, possibly Junes dirt wasnt thoroughly waxed. If dirt particles were all encapsulated in wax and dirt was dry shouldnt have molded. Mold needs air and moisture to grow. I may be wrong.

The key is to not seal it tightly in plastic containers or it can condensate inside with temperature changes. As long as it can breath, you will be fine. Bingo. It has nothing to do with the dirt and how dry/moist it is when treated. It all about plastic in humidity = condensates moisture = it can cause trouble. We made Freeze Proof dirt for 9 years in the '90s and we learned a WHOLE bunch about the process from making the best, most durable product, and how to best store it. When you're making tons at a time, you figure out good from bad real quick! I remember standing next to two pallets of waxed dirt made by a company in the upper Midwest a few years ago that was being stored in a trapping supply dealer's out building. As I stood there I mentioned to him that the moldy smell of the dirt was REALLY strong, and he told me he couldn't smell it. Some people smell certain odors better (he thought it was a "dirt" smell) than others... but don't worry, the coyotes figure it out quick

I dry it, wax it and place it in 5 gallon pails the next year what I have left I use it to cool the next years batch so it won't stick together when cooling, never had a issue did have a old pail that cracked and got water in it that was a gooey white slime mess. Water and wax don't mix that's for sure but it's dryer here in SD, Menards has tight fitting pail lids for $1.25 I buy 10-15 at a time.
