I am helping out a guy with some muskrats on his duck hole levee and I am not getting results I want. There is a small creek that runs along his levee where the pipe is. It is only about 200 yards that he owns. I have some colony traps down in the creek where the water gets about 2 feet wide, and a few pocket sets down the creek. I have come up empty the past two nights, so does anyone have any tips to catch these things. Thanks

Look for the holes

You may think before you act. The question is did you listen to your own council?

Hard to beat pockets sets for rats. Make sure your traps almost go off of their own. A lot of rats sit on guys pans with their middle fingers in the air.

Another problem I am having is there is no scat and very few tracks. He says that the rats tore up his levee last year so I know they are in there. I have found a few holes in the banks and I have 110s in them. I am also only using lure so do I need to use bait too or should lure alone be okay?

Rats don't always have the same populations from year to year. It's possible not many rats this year as compared to last, that being said look for signs of feeding or feed beds, rats gotta eat.

You can narrow that 2 foot wide creek down with a log or angled piece of fence where they have to swim into several colony traps spaced along it., or into body grips, no bait or lure needed.. Muskrats don't come out every night. In very cold weather they may not venture out for days. On warmer, rainy nights they are out in force. The best bait with footholds I've used for them is a wedge of golden delicious apple.
