No deaths, very few if any real injuries. Some impressive infrastructure damage, and a bit of structural. The seismic building codes that were developed after 64 proved their worth, and altogether we came out pretty well.

I expect he'd say that building codes oppress an individual's freedom to build however he likes. Jim

If I’m outside city limits in most boroughs and not financing I can build whatever I want. Like I said though, I also appreciate the research and engineering science that provides standards for building longevity, and I use the code for everything bigger than a doghouse because it’s worth it.

That's a common misunderstanding. The Alaska building code applies throughout the state. There's just no enforcement outside cities.
You might have a problem if you try to sell a non-code-compliant home.

Jim Many states are like that. I know my home state of Alabama actually does require code statewide even though most think otherwise. It that only about half a dozens counties have code inspectors while the rest operate on the honor system.

All my buildings survived. I guess I don't need mandated codes to build stuff that works. Individual freedom is great!

Jim Not a misunderstanding at all Jim. I’m a contractor. There is absolutely no state legal requirement to build to any code or standard. The reason it’s an issue when selling is that banks don’t want to loan on a sub-standard asset. But even in that case, banks usually just hire a visual inspector who has no idea about the hidden structural elements, and if he passes it the bank usually will. Selling a sub-code dwelling is still possible, either to a cash buyer or “as-is” for a reduced appraisal. Meeting and documenting code compliance makes the selling process much easier (not to mention it’s just a good idea), but again there’s no legal relevance to the state.

Yup. I don’t dispute the value of the codes, I’m just glad the state stays out of the enforcement and lets the industry handle it. It works pretty well.

The seismic building codes that were developed after 64 proved their worth, and altogether we came out pretty well. I did masonry work on a new school in Soldotna back in the mid eighties. There was so much steel in the grade beams concrete could barely make its way down through it. All of the walls were poured solid and re-bar placed every four feet, horizontally and vertically. An insane amount of steel went into that building to help it ride out a major earthquake.

Anchorage has stricter building codes than the state generally, particularly as to earthquake protection.
Anchorage also has code enforcement, unlike most rural areas.

Jim A lot of small towns don't have the money in the budget to hire a competent code enforcement officer. I used to make it a point to go visit the code enforcement guy/gal whenever I was doing work in a town I hadn't done work in before. Got me off n the right foot with them and some localities can be more stringent with their codes than the state or feds require.

Airlines are subject to FAA regulation, so my GUESS (only) is that they might be exempt. Someone would have to scour the ADA to be sure.

Well I’ll be. It actually is on the books! Learn something new every day! I even looked up the statute number and found the whole revision list. Thanks Jim! For practicality’s sake, I’ve always just used the nearest applicable local code, since that gets me the relevant local variables such as frost line, snow and wind loads. Kenai and Soldotna both have their own, which are oddly slightly different, though not really enough to matter.
