My earthquake avoidance plan worked out real well...

I'm on vacation in Key West, FL. Didn't feel a thing!

My cousins in Anchorage are shook up but All safe. Their homes were cracked and damaged quite a bit. But again. They are safe!

No deaths, very few if any real injuries. Some impressive infrastructure damage, and a bit of structural. The seismic building codes that were developed after 64 proved their worth, and altogether we came out pretty well.

So where is Finn? I bet he doesn't believe in building codes.

I expect he'd say that building codes oppress an individual's freedom to build however he likes.

Haha you’re probably right. I do appreciate that Alaska has no state-wide building requirements. If I’m outside city limits in most boroughs and not financing I can build whatever I want. Like I said though, I also appreciate the research and engineering science that provides standards for building longevity, and I use the code for everything bigger than a doghouse because it’s worth it.

That's a common misunderstanding. The Alaska building code applies throughout the state. There's just no enforcement outside cities.

You might have a problem if you try to sell a non-code-compliant home.

Many states are like that. I know my home state of Alabama actually does require code statewide even though most think otherwise. It that only about half a dozens counties have code inspectors while the rest operate on the honor system.

All my buildings survived. I guess I don't need mandated codes to build stuff that works. Individual freedom is great!

I am in Anchorage now. Waiting for a plane to get me back to the land of mud before the big one hits Anchorage.
In 35 years I never felt a quake in the village, but about three and a half weeks ago I felt my first one.
I believe I was the warning shot for the 7 that just happened.
