Had the best hunt of my life on Tuesday, me and my dad were hunting our 125 acre property in southern Ohio, and on opening day which was Monday I sat all day and at 4 pm I grunted a few times and had a 4 PT come in but that was the only deer I saw in 12 hours. Tuesday I told my dad if I hadn't saw anything by 4 I was going to try some rattling. Well I hadn't had any action and was getting sleepy so around 4 I decided to rattle(for only the 2nd time in my life) and I did a short rattling sequence, threw in a few grunts. Hung the horns up and eased back in to my climbing stand, it was now 4:15. Well I had my hands in my pocket with a couple hand warmers and was kinda dozing off, I looked up and this buck was standing at 40 yrs with his nose in a doe bed That I had jumped when climbing up a few hours earlier. I saw he had 5 on his right side so I knew he was a good one but it wasn't until I put my scope on him from my savage 220 slug gun that I realized how big he was. About the time I got my scope on him he tilted his head back and lip curled and I About crapped down both pant legs. Well I shot and blew a limb into on the first shot, luckily he ran down the hill and stopped at about 80 yds, and I shot again and watched him run about 20 yds out of sight in the thicket. After getting down I went to where I shot last and there was no blood in the fresh snow and my heart sank, so I began to track him in the snow and about 25 yds later saw him piled up. The slug had blew his heart out and lodged in the hide on the opposite shoulder. By far my best buck, took me and dad 2 hours to get him out. He's 25" inside and had 30" mainbeam. He scored 190 6/8" and if he hadn't broke his g4 on his left side he'd been around 198". Best thing was I got to share it all with the ole man [Linked Image]

Thanks guys. Had cams out on the property since September and never had any pics of him so not sure if he just moved in or what. Been to wet for the farmer to cut the soybeans so it's attracted a lot of deer

Huge. There have been a lot of nice buck pictures/stories on here lately. That feller must have had to walk through the woods with his head sideways to not get caught up on brush.

Yea, I was thinking the same thing. There was more trucks parked around on surrounding properties this year than I've ever saw so it made me wonder how many people knew about the buck

Amember of our camp that has a farm was watching a nice Buck all summer and fall.
Come rifle season, another member of our camp shot it on the mountain at daylight, several miles from where it was all summer/fall.

Thanks. And good luck with the big 4×4, that would be something to see a big 8 with that kind of frame

I'm no expert on age but I've killed some old bucks 2 of which were 8+, that I had aged, but I really believe he was only 4 1/2 or 5 1/2. His teeth were not wore down much and he wasn't huge bodied(probably 175 dressed). If he was only 4 it's hard to imagine what he could have turned into in 2 more years with that typical frame. But I was sure happy to take him now. Lol

Bass 10 he grossed 190", by far my biggest buck. Yea turkey time I sure hope he spread his genes in that area real good. I've killed older deer but didn't have the genetics this guy had. Maybe in 5 years I can chase one of his sons around

Yea, bass I bought a place up there several years ago and loved the area of southern Ohio, great people and great hunting. It's a little pressured during shotgun in that area but where can you go that isn't. If the wife will agree to it after the kids are raised I'd like to spend about half my time there and half in my home state of Tenn. People are great in both places but the hunting is definitely better in Ohio. Lol

He has been spreading his genes most likely since he was 1.5 yr old. Lots of our young bucks get to breed here. On top of that those genes are already saturated in the herd from the other deer that carry the same genetics.

Thanks again everyone. Has anyone else had much success rattling that late in the season. It was only the second time in my 25 years of hunting that I tried it, I was always afraid of spooking deer off. But with the results I got I will definitely try again
