for towing and hauling anything more than couple of kids bikes - you'll want full size IMO

As far as buying American, that is just a sad joke anymore. Chrysler took all that bail-out money then sold the company to Fiat, the Italian auto maker. That's right boys, your Dodge Rams are now make by the Italians... Merica! LOL

And my Dodge Ram 50 isn't even a Dodge, it's a Mitsubishi Mighty Max. Back in the eighties Dodge completely misread the auto trends and was getting it's arse kicked in the small truck market due 100% to mismanagement and stupidity. They realized they had to do something quick and had no time to retool and get into the booming market. So they commissioned a bunch of Mighty Maxes from Mitsubishi, put there own badges and emblems on them and called them Rams. LOL.

My Tundra is built right here in America in San Antonio, Texas. Tacomas are built there too. In fact, Toyota has four manufacturing plants in America in Texas, Kentucky, Mississippi and Indiana.

Spot on about the whole American made vehicle thing. The Tundra's are indeed built in America, as is the Nissan Titan. Stroll through your local Chevy dealer and look on the window sticker for the assembly point of a new Silverado. Many of them are built in Mexico. Tundra has more American parts in it's make-up than the Silverado or Ram as well.

went from full size to small Toyota BACK to full size over 35 yrs.
Toyota has 330k miles and still runs great BUT full size needed these days to pull campers and tractors etc

Changing out of wet clothes after a trapping dunking, is mo' beta' for me in a full size than mini truck...prefer to do it with heat running...lol.

It all depends on your needs....get MORE than you think you'll need.

I did 3 trucks ago...and went right back to a full size. Full load and better gas mileage , smaller truck doesn't necessarily have better mileage, depends on the engine.

Full size is 3/4T or bigger with at least an 8 foot cargo area. !/2T is mostly a passenger vehicle and the little trucks can haul just as much cargo if not so many passengers.

I sure don't miss driving back the lanes the farmers have rutted up with their full size trucks and me being tossed side to side because of the tiny wheel base.
Full size from here on out.

If you're looking at the Tacoma so you can get better mileage than a full-size anything, forget it. I've driven Toyotas (and other things; Ford, Chevy, Mitsubishi, Piper, Cessna) for years. Have always liked the mileage, toughness, resale value, etc. Not any more. Currently have a '07 Tacoma with the 6-cylinder, 6-speed manual trans. Only 120K on it, and am very NOT impressed. Poor mileage (and I'm a hyper-miler), poor towing performance, suspension built like a car, not a truck. Hopefully the resale value will hold, as that's about the only thing going for it. I expect it to get 300K if it's a "typical" Toyota, but I'll dread putting in the fuel (at about 15.2 mpg).

The new Toyota has been sitting for a month now so that tells a guy how handy the little truck is on the line, if I had to "monkey" all over the bigger truck all day long I'd be flat wore out! LOL

On a nasty cellar drain hand lob one time. Wife's cousin was helping. Went for stone, he went in with his new Nissan, said 500lbs. I thought it was going to bend it. I went in with 12 yr old heavy half and said put a ton on.
That was his only trip, I hauled all the rest while he bucket carried.
Never again did I hear how he could haul more because of same registration weight and his lower tare weight.
His hauled post holes well, I told him lol..

He did stack miles on that thing until it rotted out. They all do that around here, if you run them in mud and snow.

It's all in how you drive them.

I have had 3 Tacomas. Still have 2 of them.

2003 extended cab got 21-23 miles per gallon with ladder rack and ladder.

2007 gets 23-25 miles per gallon.

2016 gets 20-23 miles per gallon.

All 3 of the above trucks are 4 cylinders. The 03 and 07 are 5 speed standard transmissions. The 16 is an automatic transmission.

I have driven and owned full sized F150's. I never felt comfortable in them after driving Rangers and Tacomas. Always felt like I was taking up my side of the road and half the other side.

Yes the 4 cyl is great if you are just driving. All I had were 6 cyl 15-18 mpg all I ever got. The 2011 Silverado I had got 21mpg at most highway speeds. The one I have now will get 15 around town and 22-26 on highway depending on how fast I drive. PLUS it has 4door crew cab, and will pull my 21 ft bass boat like nothing is back there. Hook a Tacoma to a 4,000 lb nitro bass boater and watch it struggle......

Definitely comes in handy for me with wildlife control. I like it, wouldn't downsize unless I had to.

First I had an F150- always problems with it 15 mpg

Next I had a 2002 Tundra - not one lick of trouble and sold it @ 240 k miles it got 17 mpg. Hauled a trailer and a canoe on top. Did a lot of trapping and camping out of that truck. I even drove it for two weeks in the rocky's camping in the back of it just fine.

Then I got a 2010 GMC Sierra Last week the oil pressure took a nose dive and the screen on the bottom of the sending unit was clogged, the handle on the inside of the driver's door busted when I pulled on it to get out and the right back tire kept going flat - or the sending unit said it was. I like the ride but this truck has had MANY issues, a spring broke in half while it was setting in my driveway, I plugged a trailer plug into the back bumper and my had went completely through it, both back light and the two lower front lights filled with water and the bulbs burned out, ALL the windows quit working and the dealer told me my wires were ''flaky and old, 4 wheel drive went out in front right after it kept locking the front wheels together when I went around corners, After a trip to the dealer to install a dual battery all the dash lights quit, the remote starter stopped several times, When I change the front brake pads the rotors are warped every time, All four tire pressure sending units went bad, The air conditioner quit twice, It's only 8 years old it gets 17 mpg

I have a 2011 Tundra too. It is the most uncomfortable truck I have ever ridden in. I'm 6'3'' and my head is only 1/2'' from the ceiling. Getting in and out is awkward. It gets 11 to the gallon

I'm looking at the Tacoma also. For the size they are a lot like the old Tundras were -which is nice. Plenty of room.

I have trapped out of all of them and the GMC has a topper with side doors. I don't need that much room since I don't have kids. I like the truck but something breaks or burns up on it every other week and the dealer accuses me of doing things like jumping ditches and overworking the truck. The four wheel drive is ''locking '' the front wheels in again on it's own. It makes we wonder how long before something worse happens to it. The bumper deal was terrible. It looked like I punched a hole in it. GMC and the Dealer have never stood behind any of it and have accused me of abusing it.

Both Toyota's I had have had recalls and they give me a FREE car to drive while the FREE work is being done. Probably trading the GMC in this spring before it explodes.

Just passin through

For my plumbing business, I lease a new truck every 3 years, Started out with a Ram 4x4 5.7 Hemi. Big truck with plenty of power but had mechanical issues (lots) that were covered but still caused down time for the business waiting for repairs. Last 3 trucks have been 4x4 Tacoma double cabs. No mechanical issues at all. Toyotas hold their value extremely well. Double cab 4x4's hold their value even better. The dealership pleads with me to bring the truck in before lease end to work another deal on a new one. They then sell my old truck at a profit of course but my new truck ends up costing less per month for the next 3 years! Gas mileage has varied over the 3 models starting out at 18/19 mpg. My latest truck, a 2016, has a different engine design and averages 21/22 mpg. Towing is weak and in that regard I miss a V8! Will tow a 17' boat fine but my enclosed 14' trailer drops mpg to 14 or so! Hope this info helps! I will be trading my current truck in this next fall fall for the latest Tacoma.

Chris

I am with Lawdog-for trapping big trucks flat out suck.I switched from a Tundra to a Tacoma years ago and have not looked back. The new Tacoma gets decent mileage and I can reach over the sides and get traps etc-you aren't doing that with the big trucks these days.If you are hauling big stuff-go ahead and I would agree with the bigger trucks for sure.I can haul my 20 ft Lund Predator with no issues at all.Unless you are hauling a lot-big trucks don't make sense to me at all.
