Its been coming for a while but my youngest kid signed up to become a cav scout in the U.S. Army. His great uncle fought under Patton in Germany late in WWII. His uncle went from private to full colonel during various different jobs in the Army and is a veteran of Iraq and Afghanistan. Sort of bittersweet for ma and me. I tried to convince him to do ROTC but he wanted to start off as an E-1. He ships out next July for his basic down at Ft. Benning. Some serious water drinking will be happening then...

He can shoot better than me. I pray he never has to use that skill for real over the next 4 years.

I did 27 years in the Reserve. Started at E1 and retired at 0-4. If your son decides to make a career of the military, tell him to examine the retirement pay tables. When I went from E-6 to 0-1, my base pay actually backed up a little, but my retirement went up significantly.

My son signed up to be a cavalry scout, in the Army, on September 12th, 2001. The day after the 9/11 terrorist attacks. He was still officially in high school but he skipped his senior year of high school and was going to college. It's a pretty good deal. The school pays for a year of college before you ever graduate from high school He went into the Army after high school graduation. He spent 4 ½ years in the Army, 2 ½ of those in Iraq.
I know he went in at a higher pay grade because he had a years worth of college.

My name ain't Keith

I understand your worry but a congratulations is in order to you, his mother and him! He will do great things for this country and we will all be indebted.
I retired went from Pvt to Sfc as Field Artillery and Infantry. Best thing I ever did. See the world, experience different cultures and make friends that will be there forever. Spent most my time with 10th Mountain Division and 82nd Airborne. I miss it.

That's awesome! I enlisted as a 19D Cav Scout in 1987 and loved it. I'm Field Artillery now (Happy St Barbara's Day to any Redlegs out there) and will be retiring in a couple years. Best decision I ever made and he will be better for having served, regardless of how long he stays in.

I know how you feel, only difference is mine joined the Marines and leaves Sunday. Guess he may stand on the same yellow foot prints I did 43 years ago,
