I buy my guns from the small shops for more than one reason.
Every day is a gift from GOD, don't waste it!!
If they have plenty of food, give them something interesting to smell

I stopped in a 'Custom AR Gun Shop" the other day to buy an orange hat for my son. They sell fishing stuff, and its an old bait shop I used for years. I asked them if they knew Dicks was toying with not selling hunting equip anymore, they said no. The only orange they had was a hat on a mounted bear. They sold it to me for $3. I mentioned I had tried to buy my hunting license from them, and would buy everything hunting from them if possible, and that I dont like Dicks.
They looked at me like I was an idiot. I hate that shop. They dont even sell fishing licenses. I liked it more as a dedicated bait shop two old ladies owned. Now they sell ARs and screw on accessories for people who think thats difficult. No actual smithing.
What happened to the outdoor mom and pop shops? I only know of 1, and they are in NJ, so I cant shop there much. I just want to buy my hiking, fishing, hunting, and gun equip from a private owned business, but its nearly impossible. I hate Dicks

A significant reason why there are fewer "mom and pop" sport/gun shops is economy of scale.
The smaller, local retailers cannot compete with the larger box stores and the majority of consumers nowadays want everything CHEAP. Cheap this and cheap that...
Some of us may still give our business to the smaller shops, but not enough of us - unless they diversify bigtime and sell other "stuff" as well. Yep. People turned to big box stores for the cheap prices and all was "good" for a while... But now that they have driven most of their small-scale competition out of business they are trying to use their power in the market to dictate their "values" to consumers. Mike

Some of us may still give our business to the smaller shops, but not enough of us - unless they diversify bigtime and sell other "stuff" as well. As an example of this, I interviewed a local gun and bait shop as part of a business class. We talked about some of his issues with getting trapping supplies and other things at a decent wholesale price. His shop is basically his retirement account and really doesn't have any employees right now outside of his daughter. For him to buy stuff at wholesale price, he has to join different buyer groups so that they can buy enough to get the wholesale price. Wal-Mart and probably some other retailers are so big that they can usually tell their vendors what the wholesale price will be and if they don't like it...well we will just go to your competitive.
