No one ever felt an extra two ounces of down in their pack. They have wanted for it at two am however. Can always zip it open a bit. If only ever doing summer trips, going a bit lighter is fine I guess. I just recall being cold as being an issue. Being too cold sucks. I sleep cold also, so that might sway my opinion on this. I also have six or seven bags including a wiggys, a -18 down bag made by thermarest, a marmot trestles, a Chinook -40...and if it was just summer I would bring my Western mountaineering ul and a bug net and tarp.

Sleeping bag rating temps are a guideline, you can use it down to that temp but it is not going to be the most comfortable. The test subjects normally wear a good base layer and a stocking cap. When I was camping in zero degrees (0) temps I went with a negative forty (-40). It makes for a long night when you are not comfortable and I also recommend a good insulated pad also. For (32) degrees I would go with a (0) degree bag. Better to unzip then not have enough.

So how about some recommendations for under $200. I looked at the Western mountaineering ultralight and it is quite pricey when you are buying 5 of them.
I was loyal to "Mountain Hardware" brand, never had any zipper failure issues or other problems.

I understand I took my -40 out in moose season when it was 30 above and unzipped, but in the summer Late June through August the temp can be 75 all day and all night. I just figured a 32 would be fine even if it got down to 40.

The old GI mummy bag is cheap and adequate at those temperatures. I have a couple of them in my emergency gear in the cache at the trapline

There ya go. Those old GI mummies will be fine. Throw a tarp over all of them if it gets frosty Those are the best all around down sleeping bag ever.

You cannot go wrong with a wiggys bag. They are a synthetic and may be a bit heavy but are very well built and made here is the USA. The insulation they are made from(lamalite) is the only insulation that can be compressed for a long period and still retain its insulative properties. The military uses them in ejection seat survival kits....they vacuum pack em down to tiny. The outer bag is rated for 40 and you can buy other bags that will zip into it and get down to -60. Hands down the best bag's I own and I own quite a few. I have an outer bag that is a bit small for me that I would sell, pm me if your interested. Most of the models are under $200 on his web site, the exception would be the -40 bags. The ultra light is for 20 and would be a very good choice for you, imo….if you folks can handle the bulk and weight of a non down bag. The thing with down is that if it gets wet your screwed. The lamalite works well even if it is wet and it will actually wick your body generated moisture thru it. I know guys that have been soaked and stripped down to base layers, crawled in and woke up with their base layers dry. The wiggys come in a few different sizes and are roomier than most down bags. Check out his site: WiggysI also have a few very good condition used down bags that I would sell.
