I read a lot on here that people "have the fur tanned." Do you guys do it yourself or send it somewhere like a taxidermist?

Whatever you do don't send it to a taxidermist. It will cost you at least 3x more and the quality may be less than desired.
Scroll down a few threads, and you'll find a current discussion on the subject.

It is probably 50-50 - do it yourself or have it professionally done. Most tanneries accept shipments from individuals, so no need to go,through a middle man like a taxidermist, unless he is doing the skinning and prep work for you.

Several tanneries do individual fur on tanning

Moyle Mink (Idaho)
tubari (New Jersey)
Great Northern (Wisconsin)
Z&L (New Jersey)
Sleepy Creek ((Iowa)

Just listing a few that come to mind.

I use Moyle because they are close by.
