A video showing a wolf in Voyageurs national park successfully catching several suckers out of what looks like a shallow part of a river/stream. The moose population in this area is much more stable than other parts of the state and some of these biologists are speculating this is because the wolves in this area focus on eating other animals such as beaver and fish.

Lot safer hunting fish & beaver than a moose!

During a decent sucker run, when they congregate for mating, suckers are extremely easy to catch. It's more likely the wolf is making use of a temporarily abundant, food source, than it is a dedicated fish eater. A wolf, like other predators, is going to make use of the easiest source of protein available, whether it's congregating fish or moose calves or deer fawns.

X2 ! I know when we would build a fish trap for white fish in the fall, the wolf tracks all along the creek would be a solid trail !! The beaver dams especially got a lot of traffic. I assumed the wolves were taking fish as they went over the dams

Wow, and they call themselves researchers. Just goes to show when you know nothing at all about wolf behavior everything is a "revelation".

I think it's great that they are 'discovering' this stuff. The more people that see this information the better chance there is for active management........IMO. Some of this may seem like common sense for those of us who spend time in the sticks but urban folks don't have the same observations that we do. The more interest there is, the better...IMO smile
