Okay, so you probably seen my other posts about 3 maybe 4 young boys (9 - 10 years old) who want to start trapping. They don't hardly have the first idea about trapping so they're still in the process of learning the basics, plus they have no supplies. I'm trying to start them out trapping the easy animals like, coon, grinner, bobcat, & grey fox. (Here in TX we have lots of cats and around here they're one of the easier animals to trap.) Would anyone on here like to help them out? See I've only been trapper for a couple years so I'm not much of a teacher. Any advice for them?

Thanks for your help!
AuthorTrapper.

Like was stated in one of your other threads. The kids should look into joining their local trappers association. Find a mentor close by and go from there.

Unless regs have changed, there is no ROW trapping in Texas. So permissions must be sought out. Supplies wont do a bit of good if they cant be used.
As mentioned above, join assoc. and find someone willing to take them on their own line. Finding someone to do that may be difficult. The mentor may be worried the kids will reveal their trapping area and could cause the mentor to lose ground to another trapper.

Most of the boys live on big ranches w=that their Dad's work on or run, so I don't think they'd have a problem finding land to trap on! smile

offering their property to trap on would probably get some takers,,,mentors contacted thru state assn officers.

Out of curiosity, is there a state mandated trappers education course? Have they taken it? I found the one I attended very informative. I know my local trappers association runs classes on a regular basis.
I think, for the time being, if all they get to do is help you on your trap line, that will be enough. At their ages, they will absorb knowledge like a sponge. And their enthusiasm will run you ragged. You can also learn a lot by teaching. It will force you to remember things you didn't even know you knew.

Have you spoken to the parents about getting the boys state assn memberships for Christmas, as I suggested a few months ago?..then contacting officers for mentors?
