Correction, fish and game and the reindeer herders association wanted the map taken down not the locals. The said it was an unfair advantage.

No50, why is posting whereabouts a threat? Isn't harvest managed by seasons, bag limits etc. Is FB increasing harvest that much? mt

Face-boot was used last winter and a staggering amount of animals were taken, there was a lot of wastage that occurred, "Treaty rights" does not limit harvest. Sat through a 2 hour presentation of our Manitoba herd and where it goes in NWT and Nunavut in the summer Then there was presentations of the other 4 or 5 sub-herds The Quebec-Ungava herd is in dire straits. the population that was hammered was on in the boarder of Nwt and Nunavut Satalite phones and GPS positions and fobs used to locate kill zones for pick up

The map was running out of Alaska so I figured the were getting close to Yukon Jeff. Looks like they crossed the Dalton and the pipeline.
What you guys opinion on Trump opening the 10 02 lands. I know the zinupiat support it for the jobs. Do you think industry can be done while at the same time allowing the caribou to calve in the same area? If its done properly it shouldn't be a problem.

They used to have a map of the collard western Arctic caribou herd, but they took it down because the villagers up north didn't want the sport hunters to know where they were. So we have to rely on first hand reports now. No, not exactly If you remember Jim Dau, Kotzebue's Caribou Biologist of 25 years, he personally told me , when I asked him, that the FnG found out villagers (Buckland, Deering , Shishmareff) were using the info to find the Caribou, and took down the site. The map was of the Northern Seward Peninsula, and thats where the WACH winters. The map would have a dot for every coller and you could find 'em with ease, if you know the areas to ride. I loved that site. Ive never met a sport hunter looking for Caribou in winter. In Summer/Fall, there was not a dot to be seen on the map, as the WACH was still North of Kobuk River, as are most sports hunters. Locals keep a close tab on animals anyways, its not hard to find a herd, and the best way to get to them.
