Had close call #3 yesterday... Ruined another pair of jeans and actually drew a little blood this time... Wife isn't too happy with me and I figure one of these days I'm going to catch my guardian angel napping...

She is demanding that I begin taking more precautions... And she's right. Plus they're cheaper than medical care and lost time off work.

Is there any one brand that stands out from all the others? Or is there any brand you would recommend I avoid?

I use Stihl branded chaps and have been very happy with them. No matter what brand you get, they will be better than jeans!

Ya, I agree should have a pair no matter who makes them. I don't have a pair but should even though I don't spend much time behind a saw any more. I have had a couple close calls but I did have chaps at the time. I would get a pair they also keep you warm in winter and save the pants from wear and tear also.

I use the Stihl chaps after one wake up. Cut the jeans and boot but no flesh. Check out the stihl chap test on you tube. They are strapped to a log then the chainsaw is put to them-impressive.

I've used the Husqvarna chaps for ten years and they are great. I've never had to really test them on my flesh, but maybe that means I'm not too unsafe when I use a saw. I'm sure that Stihl and Husky use the same kevlar layer to stop the saw. But I cut a lot of wood for a homeowner and it is most always on a hillside and I've never touched my Husky bibs, so maybe I'm lucky, but I respect the saw at all moments.

Thanks guys... I'm in town right now. Looks like it'll be Husqvarna chaps as that is about the only option I have if I want to buy today.

My 3 close calls have been spread out over several years, but yesterday's oops sealed the deal.

I watched a tree clearing crew as they cleared several hundred acres of trees. All of the chain saw operators wore chaps every minute of every day. Every pair out there had multiple nicks and cuts. Some looked like they had been run through a chipper. If the professionals who use a saw day in and day out for years can't keep those saws away from their legs, what chance do we have?

you should definitely have a pair and a hard hat

I haven't tested the saw chaps yet with any cuts . I have a pair of stihl and a pair of Efco. but I got hit by a busted up top that came down while I was sawing on a tree 20 feet away the hard hat saved me some serios head injury a hole lot of stitches and a concussion for sure.

I have seen the video of Stihl and Labonville take a sharp 50-60cc saw running wide open and thrust down on the chaps wrapped over a log and the saw stopped before ti was through the chaps 0 damage to the log underneath or even the back side of the chaps.

a place to order chaps or your local saw dealer should have them for sale

saw chaps
hard hat
ear protection
safety glasses
steel toes

the minimum your going to spend at the ER is a c0-pay much more likely a 2500 dollar deductible , your loss of time not to mention months healing

sure makes a 85 dollar pair of chaps and a hard hat look really smart

I have used a set of Stihl chaps for about 15 years and the are still going strong. I used to never wear chaps until I went to work for a wood products company and got to see chaps in action during two different incidents that would have been really bad without them. They are great protection from briars and a nice extra layer if you have to get on your knees on wet ground while cutting

For me no chaps no chain saw. Just like no harness no tree stand. Besides the chaps keep all the oil and gas off your clothes.

I think all brands will work well. You may want to look at the snaps/buckles for quality as that stuff will fail over time.

Lowe's wanted $75 for their chaps... My wife jumped on Amazon and found an "ensemble" of safety gear... Chaps, safety glasses, and a hardhat/visor/earmuff combo. Since I don't need them today that will probably be what I purchase.

10 years ago I would have scoffed at the idea. But there are several folks who rely on me being alive and in working condition... Plus a grandkid on the way that I'd like to be around to spoil.

Chaps are good for casual use, but that’s about it. They offer great protection, but very little mobility. I would recommend getting a set of chainsaw pants. I swear by the labonville winter logger pants. I wear them day in and day out, both back when I was cutting wood and now. They serve as chainsaw protection, and are great winter pants for anything outdoors.
