That's a big 'un for Idaho. Off the subject a tad bit, but I weighed a couple hundred skinned carcasses (and quite a few in the round) from southeast Alaska. They are hogs. Biggest one I weighed was 48.4 pounds with the skin removed. No doubt, that otter was well over 50 lbs live weight. On the other hand, interior Alaska otter weights were just about the same as Idaho.

I just asked Greg at Fur Harvesters in WI about otter size, and yes those coastal ones are the biggest by far. He said some will not even fit in the otter shipping box that they have. He also said US southeast coast also has big ones but many are full of buck shot holes!

I used to look at the otter bins at H.E. Goldberg's in Seattle. They had one bin just for the Alaskans and besides most of those being stretched fur out the size was just amazing. Most of them were in the 8X48 range with many going into the 50's.
I have had 2-3 otter go 30-31 lbs (cotton scale). Lots of 28-29 pounders. The biggest ones here live next to fish hatcheries or in tidewater.

Got this one today 28lbs certified scale Can't help but notice how the coloration on the face and head so closely resembles that of a Sea Otter in that photo. Around my neck of the woods on Central MN my biggest so far has been 26# and I have caught a lot of them over the years. This year I had one that went just under 25#. Most of the adults I have caught run in the low 20's or just under on average.
I'm just happy to be here! Today I'm as young as I'll ever be and and older than I've ever been before!

I find it interesting that so many said 28lbs. It reminds me of a conversation with my old Boss Bob Gilman. We trapped beaver full-time for many years in Oregon for timber companies and consequently caught a fair number of otter. Anyway, I had caught a very large otter that day, which prompted a conversation about the biggest we had ever caught. He said that 28lbs. was it, and that was for dozens of critters. I laughed, because 28lbs was my record too. I don't remember how much the otter weighed that day, but I know it was not more than 28lbs.
