The only way the government shutdown has directly effected me is that I offered to buy lunch for a friend who has to work, whether he gets a paycheck or not. I have 3 other friends, who are also employed by WPAFB, who also have to continue working. Two have wives, who work and all 4 have decent savings. I know a whole lot of other people working on the base, but not as well.
I have 2 other friends, who are retired from the Airforce. I don't know if they will get their pensions or not. Both are only semi-retired and still have some income and decent savings.
I think that there should be some provision, that if you have to keep working, because your job is critical to the safety of these United States, that they have to keep paying you. Slavery is after all illegal now. I also think that military pensions should be paid still. Anyone willing to put their life on the line for the US, should get their due.

Me personally, not in the least. I do have a friend that has to work without pay, and no doubt that sucks, but I trust he'll be fine.
Just give me one thing, that I can hold on to. To believe in this livin' is just a hard way to go.

Nope. I’ve got a buddy who’s an air traffic controller and has to work through, but like everyone else he’ll get back pay when it’s over. So the only difference is he has to cover his bills until he gets paid, but he’s a good saver so I think he’ll be fine. The way the whole thing works is s joke. It’s intentionally designed to hurt the lowest people in the system the most. I’m sure salaried positions don’t aren’t affected at all, except extra time off.

Air traffic controllers are a salaried position. My 4 friends, who work at Wright Patterson Air Force Base, are all salaried and all have to work with no pay now, because they have critical jobs. Keith What I meant was, of the non-essential positions that are currently not working, it’s my understanding that hourly folks are losing money, but salaried positions will collect as normal, with back pay after the shutdown. And waiting a couple weeks for a back-paycheck is not the same as “working with no pay.” Unless you’re absolutely certain that your friends will not get paid for this time at all. But from what I’ve read/heard, pretty much everyone working will get paid for it eventually.

Yes.
The Coast Guard Auxiliary has to cease operations during the shutdown. I can’t go to meetings, go to trainings, go on patrol, conduct vessel safety checks or conduct boater safety courses.
