Good morning to all,
Just wondering what your percentages are on coyotes this year? I am running a few snares and it has been slow going with the weather here for sure, and to make it worse Iím running at 60% of them have mange. Now this is a extremely small sampling because I have only caught 5, but three have been bad. The bad ones were all on the same farm, and taken off bait piles I set. Any correlation?
Frustrating when I finally get a snare on them and then they are no good!

I only caught one so far, and she had lice BAD! Nothing but fuzz on both sides. So for me, 100% worthless coyotes.

When life gets me down..... you know hunting/trapping season is closed.

When trapping or snaring bait piles(especially dead cattle pits that have been there awhile) expect to take a share of mangy coyotes. That's the easiest food source for mangy coyotes when they aren't physically fit to hunt. It's also a contamination source for the mite to be spread to other coyotes.

I trap yotes every January for 10 days. Iíll take 45-60 depending on weather. The last few years Iíve had 50% mange. Drives me crazy!

This year I started in the middle of December and had only 2 out of the first 20 bad. After six days of trapping it rained 2Ē and froze up so I switched to snares. Every single yote Iíve snared has had mange. Doesnít matter if they are on the creek or up in open country. Mange of various degrees on all of them. Itís got me scratching my head. Only thing I can figure is that Iím not a Snare Man; only a guy that occasionally snares. Maybe Iím snaring the mange ones because they are not 100% there in the head, and the healthy ones are avoiding my snare sets. I really have no idea, but itís drying up enough to get some jakes out so Iíll see what percentage I get next week.

30% this year for me on 22 coys. Warm weather has slowed my catch rate down this year, luckily in my area the mange has been concentrated in a couple of spots vs seeing it in all areas.

A few years ago mange was almost 60%, this year less that10%, and they all came from a couple small areas. Keep pushing on, every mangy one you catch is taken out of the pool and will help bring it back under control.

Does anyone know if they can survive mange, or will it kill them eventually? If you release the ones that just have a touch of it, what's their chances?

Last year in SD, I pitched a third. Got home, and fifty% were bad. No mange, just lice. This year, in SD, about ten%, and I've been laid up and couldn't trap here at home. Only have caught a few, but they have all been good. The way the weather has been this year, it was a good year to have the issues I had!

Larry, they can survive the mange. Not alot will, but there are always survivors in the coyote world. If any of you have caught yotes with black scars on their feet, legs and ears, or any combination of the three, he is a survivor! I have caught them while they were healing up from it too. I don't know how they do it, but they are tough! Last three critters on this rock will be coyotes, crows and cockroaches!

I think if I lived up in that country with the good silky coyotes I would treat and release the ones that are not too far along .

I had someone say the exact same thing to me. Could you give them a shot of Ivomec and turn them loose?

LDW guys around here give their coyote hounds a cc of ivomec orally to clear it up on them and it seems to work dont use the pour on or dectomax its gotta be ivomec dont know why it wouldnt work . Ive wondered if a coyote eats a cow/calf that has been worked fairly recent with ivomec to dying if that will help to fight off mange and lice .

Ivomec will clear it up on coyotes. I was told by a guy who use sell to the live market that he would use it on the ones that just had a touch of mange and then hold them for a couple weeks to clear up. Couple years ago I was right at 50% on mange. Last year no mange but lice got to a problem after the first of the year. So far this year. I haven't got a bad one . But with the weather I've only caught about half of what I did last year.

My observation. Coyotes may survive.
Red fox a death sentence.

swampgas chili and schmidt beer makes for a deadly combo
