I’m trying to improve my green sell price. I have a system I use but I think I could do better. What do you guys do? If you wash them what is the best way to dry and how long is to long to dry. I don’t want to sell something and have it slip. Or is tumbling them the best way to go? I’ve averaged $5.60 on green coons and $33 on yotes, $40 on cats small with narrow bellies. I barely have time to get them all skinned with my business, wife, kids, etc... Thanks

I only sell opossum green now and maybe a few beaver when I run short on time. Back when I sold coon and yotes green I'd wash in COLD water with a little Downy and rinse until the water ran clear. Snap the hide a few dozen times from head and then from tail end, roll in a few dry towels, this gets 80% of the water out of the fur. Then hang to dry in a 50* to 55* room with low humidity with a fan on low to med, do not dry inside a house with temps over 65*. Lastly after fur was dry I would tumble in corn cob grit in an old dryer with heat and fan removed for about 10 mins. This really fluffed up the fur , a few snaps and off to the buyer. I would freeze mine and do this at the end of season right after thawing the hides. Sounds like a lot of work but my daughter and I enjoyed it and the time together. My buyer always commented on how nice my fur looked, I like to think I got a little more than those matted, muddy, bloody pelts. Hope this helps.

The only thing I sell green is early caught coon, just brushed out, I wash on the carcass if they're muddy or bloody and then skin after they dry - I don't invest more time and energy than I need to on green fur.

If you've gone that far, you might as well stretch it.

I don't sell green but I do wash every critter that goes through my shed with the exception of muskrats. I wash after skinning and use water and Woolite. Before freeze up we use water from the hose and after freeze up I prefer to use warm/hot water. I actually always prefer warm/hot water but I don't want to lug 5 gallon bucket in and out of the house if I don't have to. After I wash them, I hang them by the nose, squeeze out as much water as I can, and let them drip dry outside prior to freeze up and in the shed afterwards. Outside, coyotes/ fox will be dry in one day, skunks will be 1 day, coons will be 1-2, and beavers will be 2. Inside they take a little extra time. Your fur will probably dry quicker than mine. I then tumble them. I do all this because I believe it adds to my enough to my fur check to make it worth while, but I could be wrong. I probably would not do all this if I was selling green. I don't think your average will improve that much.
