I have question for all the argo guys out there. I really am considering getting an argo to get back and forth from town to fish camp but there is one river crossing where the river is moving any where from 4 to 8 knots and is about 1/2 mile wide. Is this too much water for them? Never really used one just think it could make way easier. Thanks for any input, as im pretty much at home this year helping with the baby giving me way to much time to day dream.

You'll end up miles down stream with the current you describe unless you have a little outboard pushing you.
On their own they move vvveeerrryyy slowly through water. The one I had experience with about 15 years ago was also very nose heavy, I thought their use in water was marginal at best.
Maybe they're making them better now

There was a guy here that when crossing a river got caught sideways on a rock capsized and drowned. I have owned 2 and crossed small creeks that were not moving too fast and no problem. When the creek was high I went home. They are hard to get in and out of quickly if you have a problem at lease for my old heavy body!

You would have to have a death wish to attempt to cross that in an argo.

I dont own an argo but the outfitter I work for own a bunch of them. I've been using them extensively for many years now. I would have to see the river you are talking about before I could comment on it, but I have crossed lakes fully loaded with a hunter and meat more than three times wider than the distance you are talking about, and thats without an outboard. They actually travel at a pretty decent speed in calm water using just the tires. We cross the Coal river all the time. Anyone who has driven the Alcan will know what its like.

Hey thanks every one for the input! I figured it was way too much river but would be so nice to travel by land and not have to pay for a plane charter. Back to the old drawing board. Am thinking of setting up a boat with an axle to tow then put the honda in the boat and cross.

Way back when, in the mid 80's my partner and I established a land surveying business and he was convinced that a 6 wheel drive outfit would put us over the top of the competition in terms of access, speed, and I suppose overall coolness. It was not an Argo as I recall but did float for the most part. It came with a original 12HP Briggs and Stratton engine which my uncle replaced (everyone needs an uncle like this) with an Arctic Cat snowmachine engine of some sort. In 1988 I was in the best shape of my life, due to pushing, pulling, and cussing to get machine back on the trailer. We always carried a 12' or so pole to try to keep on course in a mild current. Trying to cross a river with a 8 knot current would be a solemn occasion.
