I guess that depends on what your trying to teach it to. About the only real difference between say a hard headed mule and say a hardheaded person would be the length of the 2x4 required. lol.

If there is enough life life left in a person without having any, and the person teaching it knows how to present it.

As a general rule I doubt it, you either are born with understanding of things, or you work your life trying to figure them out and learn that way.

You can lead a horse to water but can't make it drink.

Oh I think it can be taught, but not by a person and not to anyone who doesn't wish to learn. The best teacher of common sense is experience and pain, you don't know fire is hot as a kid no matter how many times your told...but burn yourself one time and you never forget it.

People in this country have become so pampered and protected by their parents and the government that common sense is no longer needed.

Yes. You probably learned it from your parents.

I really believe that's it's self taught by sc###ing up and hitting the wall and learned by doing things differently/correctly. After one or two of these learning episodes, you realize you've gained common sense.

Has absolutely NOTHING to do with formal education!

Define taught. I think Nelly hit the nail on the head.

I like to think I was taught common sense. As a 3 three old I didn't know not to touch the woodstove, but was taught not to. Of course, at some point I had to rebel against that teaching and touch it myself, lol. As I grew older, I learned to listen more to the things i was being taught.

I also believe some people just have street sense and others don't. But I believe if you are allowed to make enough bad decisions in the controlled setting of childhood with parents that will let you learn on your own, but still be there when you need someone to bandage your knee, AFTER they spank your butt and take away your toys.... you CAN learn a bit of common sense.

Yotetrapper30,

I said "self taught" by messing up. Parents play a big role in structuring their children, but IMO kids have to learn common sense through hard knocks... On their own. Maybe my thinking is skewed because I taught high school for 44 years, but I've seen genius level kids who have ZERO common sense.

You've heard the story of why the chicken crossed the road, well Why did the teenager cross the road? Because his father told him not to!

Kids don't drive carefully because somebody told them not to. It takes speeding tickets, accidents, to teach kids to,obey the traffic rules. Look at the amount of texting and driving that's done by kids and their parents.
I don't think anybody on this site would try texting in the middle of setting a 330 or a 550 4 coil.

Like I said, IMO.

I say common sense is learned at a young age. If your a parent who never corrects your kids and let them believe They’re always right then they won’t have common sense. Tell them what the world is really like and they’ll be better off than if you let them live in their own make believe world.

I believe it is "possible" to learn at "THE SCHOOL of HARD KNOCKS"!!! However this day and age...I am beginning to wonder?!? It seems like it is taking a LOT longer to graduate and it appears like there are a LOT of dropouts!!! grin

God bless and happy trails!
