I am setting 550 in wax dirt and covered with wax dirt. I have filed dogs for bare minimum pan travel and 3lb.pressure. My question is if wax dirt or sand won't freeze why do I need a pan cover. thanks

You want something, pan cover or polyfil under the pan, to keep dirt from clogging your pan and not allowing the trap to fire.

I use waxed dirt for bedding and do not use pan covers, polyfill or anything whatever. Never had a problem

Small coffee filters fit pretty nicely and no needed extra work to cut to size.

I've tried wax paper, coffee filters, poly-fil, & only peat moss. I prefer the wax paper w/ peat on top the best then poly-fil under the pan w/ peat around it.

Some folks use 1 of those small clear banana sacks from the grocery store. Seriously. I attended a demo on it once at a WTA Dist 5 rendezvous. I then tried it, and did like it.

After years of trying everything that I've ever heard of, I've gone back to denim. Heavy enough to not get blown away, and reuse them when I can find them. In the constant wind out west here, the wax paper and coffee filters are a pita, and I seem to have trouble with mice digging any kind of under the pan plugs. Use what works best for you! Nothing is perfect in all conditions.
