Out of the last few coon I caught a couple had bald patches on there rump or flanks that looked like someone took a electric shaver and just shaved off a patch of fur. The leather/skin was clean and white with no signs of a wound, scratching or sores. What could have caused this ? All were smaller coons. -Thanks

I have never seen such a thing here until this season. I have caught several rubbed coon. Bald spot down around the rump some lil smaller than a snuff can. Caught another that was thin up high on the back of his neck. I assume it is just rub. It was pretty cold here in November but since has just been huge temperature swings. Don't see why they would be rubbed.

I get a few each year here.

Money cannot buy you happiness, but it can buy you a trapping license and that's pretty close.

I got one a couple of weeks ago just like that. I looked around catch circle and found a lot of cockle burrs laying around full of hair. Bald spot on rump and halfway down the tail. So possibility?

I've always wondered if those spots weren't where they had a big glob of burdock wound up against their skin and they just couldn't take it anymore, especially when the rest of the hide looks OK.

I would guess those 'coon are wearing the fur off going and coming from the top of the hole they climb through in a barn, tree, rock pile etc...

I’ve seen that condition usually after a hard freeze that forced coon into communal denning areas. Fleas and mites make the rounds when coon bodies are bunched together. Scratching relieves the itch but all that scratching leaves bald spots.
