My right arm just hangs there. Can't lift it at all. Orthopedic doctor says my rotator cuff is completely wiped out. sounds like a serious operation. I know now what some disabled veterans go through. Anyone have any input about what I can do and what I can't? Extreme pain 24/7.. My left shoulder has two torn muscles at the rotator cuff. Just a matter of time till that one goes...

Often we do this to ourselves, lifting and twisting tears apart muscles little by little until after time this is the result. Surgery is the only option. Get it done, sooner is better, the longer you wait the more extensive and less successful the operation will be. I've had three rotator cuff repairs. The longer you wait the worse it is.

I was told this exact thing. When I asked how much that I was going to be able to lift after surgery, they said 25-30 lbs. Heck,my pack
without a beaver weighs that. Maybe at a later date.

I was told by several doctors that the pain would go away with shoulder surgery but your range of motion would still be limited. But I'm sure every case Is different.

My dad had the revers shoulder replacement done when he was about 75 , said it was the first time in years he had no pain . Do the therapy after and you will likely get along fine . Dad was pretty sure he could go back to baleing hay after he was healed up !

My right shoulder was torn off a year ago.
There are four major muscles that form the rotator cuff, all mine were severed. It's doing pretty good now.
Most importantly shop and get the best Ortho surgeon you can. Do it as soon as you can. The longer you wait the less they can recover. Therapy afterwards is critical, do it all. In six months you will be doing light duty, you will build on it from there. It will never be the same, but get after it and get back all you can.
They say you don't know what you'll get, but you do know what you've already got.
Good luck

Wait too long, and the surgery won't work. You'll get fatty infiltration of the tendons and then u are done.

I have had four rotator repairs, twice on each side. Have two friends who had shoulder replacements. Their recovery was much faster and less painful. Neither has had any problems. Some limitations on weight that can be, or maybe should be, lifted with a replaced shoulder.

I have had rotator cuff surgery on both shoulders. Do the therapy as aggressive as they will let you. It is well worth having done. I can't throw a baseball 95 miles per hour now but I couldn't before I had the surgery either. grin

Surgeon told me if the rotator cuff is shot the reverse shoulder operation is necessary, according to him, your pain should be gone, your range of motion is limited, and your not supposed to lift anything over 20#, and its a long rehab, while re habbing, no shoveling, snow blowing, pretty much most household duties.
Then I asked about gun recoil...he said absolutely not, no way no how, said if you damage the reverse option there wasnt much anyone can do to re fix it.

I live with the pain...

I've had both shoulders replaced. From what I understand they only replace the ball. I can handle 100 pounds as long as it isn't over my head. Even then I can get it up there but can't control it.
I've some pain if I sleep on my side very long.
Get it done. You'll feel much better.

I had one shoulder repaired. You are limited in range of motion, but how often do you throw overhand now days? I can lift less than half what I could twenty years ago, but I can lift ten times more than I could the day before the surgery! The biggest plus was, you can sleep at night without turning every ten minutes. The pain is gone.
