I have the box checked on my drivers license. However, I think I'm going to reconsider after this video. Seems like they may cut you up when alive with no anesthetic. That would be a very bad day.

I already been cut on with no anesthesia!

Absolutely, if my organs can help someone's quality of life, that's good.

My family has already received organs from donors in the past, I want to do the same.

Typically, if a family has never received a donated organ, they don't donate
and
families that HAVE benefitted from organ donation, donate.

No one has received any organs in my family. My brother and I were both donors. When my brother died almost 10 years ago at the age of 41 they used several of his organs. When it is time to actually let them take the organs from a deceased loved one it was harder to do than I thought it would be. It kind of feels like you are losing more of a person you have already lost. It is hard to describe. It bothered my mom more than it bothered my father and I, but dad and I both felt it. Even having experienced this I am still an organ donor. I hope it does not bother my family in that manner when I die.

With no brain function, there is no pain. I assumed all this this was common knowledge? I hope they use all mine.

I watched the video. I am and will be a donor. The horror stories will always be there. I just hope they don't ever do a brain transplant. Mine don't quite work right. Lol

How do you know this for sure? You believe there is no pain but unless you have been there, I doubt you can say that for certain. I guess you can believe the doctors if you want. I choose to believe they are far from 100% correct most if not all the time.

Thought about it, just don't care for the idea that the hospital is going to charge someone for my organs that I DONATED. Still on the fence though.

Yes.
I don't care what they do with an old bag of bones cause I won't be here.
Why not help someone who is still here?

Read the book "Stiff" they don't always go to help someone per say, unless specified your body and parts can be used for about anything.

When I was asked at the MVA if I want to be an organ donor I said, "only if I get to pick the church."

Hospitals charge for the blood I donated. If I could help someone through organ donation I would, but the discussion above makes me think twice.

I would like to know why some people would not want to be an organ donor? What do you plan on doing with them later anyway?

I made an anatomical donation to a medical school. They want all the body parts. I was signed up as an organ donor, but when I donated my body to the medical I had to rescind the organ donation.

I have been for 30 yrs. Not sure now how much is still salvageable. My wife and extended family know my wishes. Surely giving an eye or something wont bother them as much as the next step which is to turn the rest into 5 lbs of ashes?
I hear people who say they will have to " pry my gun out of my cold hand." Maybe that means they would give their donor gun. But to me that means I would fight to the death to protect the constitution with my life, but I wont give up any body parts when Im dead. I guess " when Im dead " is the questionable part.

I guess I need to put a clause on my drivers license saying "if I wake up after giving a part away you have to give it back!

By the way, if a Christian gives parts to a unsaved person and the rapture comes wont those parts all go back to the oringinal body. Bet that would be gory to see all those body parts be pulled out of the lost people left. Just food for thought, lol.

I'm not allowed to be an organ donor because of all my medical problems. So most of my body is going to a med school.

My wife is good friends with our former county coroner and has watched organ harvesting take place. She said it was pretty neat to watch for the most part.

The coroner is also a funeral director/mortician and he told her she could donate any organ she wanted to, but if she was coming to his funeral home not to donate her bones. He said they're a PITA to get to look correct, and position right because they use pvc to fill in for the bones.

I'd love to be plastinated doing something strange, a la Body Worlds. Maybe picking my nose or itching my butt. I don't really care, I'd be dead so I don't need my body.

Finster, Who the heck are we to whine with all the dispatch methods we justify and say they are humane, wait till PETA gets a hold of that video. I guess if it the last thing I experience it should be exciting. Many believe it is never over a lot of different views, may I suggest the Lees Death Ray as an appetizer. If you really want an eye opener read the book "Stiff"

Off on a tangent much? Who's whining? I'm saying that I probably don't want to be dissected if there is a possibility I am going to feel every slash, yank and pull. (at least for awhile) Whatever that has to do with dispatching an animal in a trap, PETA or Lees death ray is a bit of a leap.

I am not an organ donor. From my research, you're much more likely to be declared brain dead more quickly, if you're an organ donor, than if you're not. Doctors want to save people by parting out your organs and there is a huge financial incentive for doctors and hospitals to part you out as well.

In the event that you end up in a situation where your organs could be harvested, if you're not an organ donor, you're family will be asked to donate your organs. I would much rather have a family member make that informed decision, than some doctor, who I most likely have never met, whose motivations I do not know.

A friend of mine want be an organ donor. His reasoning is this. He gives his organs away for free. The hospital and doctors profit tremendously off of his free donation. The person receiving such organs gets charged a tremendous amount which could lead to financial hardship. All this is done and the donor doesn't even receive a simple pine box to rest in. That's his reasoning.

My wife was an organ donor. She had a seizure disorder and was in a coma twice.

Coma 1: She received substandard medical care. 3 times they told me she was dying, was brain dead, and would wake up a mental vegetable and asked me to sign a do not resuscitate order. They brought in hospital administrators to try to convince me. I hired an expert board certified neurologist to come in to supervise her care. She woke up after 8 days and recovered with no brain damage.

We suspected the organ donor status may have been at issue. She immediately cancelled to organ donor permission.

Coma 2: This was about a year later. Same hospital. She received excellent medical care. They never once told me that she was brain dead. They never mentioned a do not resuscitate order. She woke up after 5 days with some memory loss. For the next year I worked with her to help restore her memory.

The average organ donor is worth 1 million dollars to the hospital. I had a friend who has his own high performance twin engine airplane. He volunteered to fly hearts for organ recipients. The organization reimbursed him for fuel. When he learned how much profit is made by everybody in the system, he quit.

My father had kidney failure and was getting dialysis. He went to a meeting at the hospital about donor kidneys. The cost was $350,000 up front and insurance does not pay. If I would have donated a kidney, my insurance would not pay for an elective and not medically necessary surgery. Next, I would lose my insurance because I would now be a high risk person. It would be nearly impossible to ever again get health insurance.

Choose wisely!

Soo is the point of this that Finster is skeered of pain?? Come on ya sally.

I’m a donor. Don’t plan on needing them after.

However, Willy’s story is enough to give pause. I wish there were a way to donate through a non-for-profit, to remove that concern.

Your friend doesn't know how organ donation works then if he thinks the donor doesn't get a "simple pine box to rest in." Most "harvesting" of organs is done right at the hospital the patient is taken to, or closest to. Once the harvesting is complete then the body is released to the family or funeral home. He may mistaking donating organs for donating his body to a medical school. Even then they are usually cremated and either buried or given to the family.
My BIL's mom donated her body for cancer research purposes. A few weeks after her passing the family got her ashes.

Refusing to donate organs because hospitals make money off it is one of the dumbest, most selfish things I’ve ever heard. I guarantee if anyone here had a child that needed an organ to survive, they’d change their tune. I’d like to see some of you explain to a parent in that situation that their child should die because the hospital might make too much money.

Our neighbor buried two children due to a genetic defect in their hearts. They donated the organs and for all of the high minded lecturing, there is a reality in this situation which is never counseled, and that is these children have been dead over ten years, and periodically there are posts in the newspaper from these parents in not having dealt with their children being dead, as they never have had closure as "their children live on in others".
Organ donation is a personal thing and castigating others, because they have a legitimate objection to hospitals making money off of organs and families are stuck with hospital bills, or the reality that in order to obtain organs the donor operations sell the propaganda that the person is not dead but lives on, is an issue which needs to be addressed as watching people never having closure over the death of a loved one is an abuse.
Life is an unfair situation. My sister was killed in a car crash because she had a safety belt on which held her in place, so a fence corner post took the top of her head off. This year, day after Thanksgiving my mother died in my arms of a heart attack unexpectedly. I did CPR on my dad when he expired. I am not an organ donor, but if my spouse or children would have need, they would have it.
Organ donating is not the perfect world that advocates claim in David Rockefeller had six heart transplants and the reality is skin donations are used in genital enhancement. Once you sign that permission, the system can market you to the highest bidder and your parts will end up in places you were never told. Instead of making this a holier than thou debate, should not the current broken system be fixed where families will have a right to state how the organs are utilized, not sold and the necessity of ending the lie that "the dead live on in others", so families can have emotional closure.

I am not. If I could choose the organ or organs to be donated I would consider it.
