I have results going back twenty years and grays have always averaged higher than reds at this southeast PA sale.
The red fox average is terrible. I have seen the results from other recent PTA District sales and red averages aren't any better.

Is there a reason grey fox always average higher than red fox at these sales? Just curious as to your thoughts why. Thanks. Other than the obvious answer that the buyers are paying more for grays, I really don't know. These are state-licensed fur buyers. I don't know what they do with the furs after they buy them but I would think they sell them to one of the big auction houses. There may be a craft market for grays, I don't know. It could also be that our reds here in southeast PA are not very good-looking, the majority are frosty-rumped and flat. Not many grays here either, most come from local trappers that trapped them out of the region and are selling locally.

WOW, that's unreal seeing skunks go for nearly twice as much as red fox. ..........THE NEW NORMAL. The red fox market is in the toilet, wait until you see what the Canadian auctions sell them for.

Is there a reason grey fox always average higher than red fox at these sales? Just curious as to your thoughts why. Thanks. Prime, well handled Grey Fox have typically sold for great prices the last several years at New York State auctions. I believe most are being bought by craft & Internet sales buyers who resell them at Mountain Man Rendezvous, Outdoor Sport Shows, Tourist & Curio Shops, and on E-bay. The few grey I have sold the last few years have all sold for Over $20,00. At Last February's Herkimer Auction My Grey skinned out with complete legs and paws went Top Lot Grey at $30.50. I'd bet this will be the case at this winter's New York State Fur Auctions. w

My first land critter caught was a reddie. I never got any money for it because I shipped it to a Korean "friend" of my brother's when bro was living in TX as a "sample" fur-- it was dried but not tanned so I hope it rotted on him. Anyway, I've always had a warm spot in my heart for reddies even though they are few and far between here in se SD. To see that average for PA reds, even if they aren't the best of PA reds, is so sad. Same with wild mink which I've enjoyed catching during the winter with 110s coming out of their snow bank holes. Just sad...

I remember that. It was almost like the fur boon of the late seventies/early eighties all over again. Didn't last long though.
