What is the best way to turn a tanned mink fur side out? I home tanned some hides and having a hard time turning the head/neck of my mink.

Did you break it as it was drying?

I did, but the lips and nose and ears were pretty stiff. I worked them best I could and finally got them turned. They were the first hides I tanned and I think I waited too long to start working them. I used EZ 100 and they turned out good finally. I was only able to break the bottom end by pulling, I had to break the top end over an edge. Not sure, but I think if I had started breaking them a little sooner it would have went easier. Should I have shaved the flesh side of the lips and nose?

Did you turn the lips and nose? That would of greatly helped and would of made any additional shaving easier.

Next time I will split the lips, I didn't think it was necessary with a mink.

Take a damp rag and dampen the hide it makes the leather malleable enough to turn it.

I just did some mink. They where a little stiff in that area so I took an emery board (kinda rough one maybe 120 grit) and thinned that area down. Then I broke them hard over a board. If they are really stiff dampen the stiff spots and let them sit until soft before rebraking.

You really appreciate how long their neck is when you try and turn a hide that is a little stiffer. You notice it skinning and turning a green hide to snap it clean, but really notice it after its tanned!
