I was talking to my uncle yesterday and he got wondering about the fur market and he had an idea that might make sense and it might not. He wants to take some of the beaver I catch, mount them and sell them online. Yes it's alot of overhead to start of course. Would it make sense to give it a try?

I was gonna mount the first beaver I ever caught and it was around $550 so I had it tanned, that was many years ago. At that price I'd think you'd want some buyers lined up first? Just my thoughts.

If you can find the buyers before you start the mount then you have a guaranteed paycheck for the most part.

The vast majority of people can't justify the cost of taxidermy simply for decoration. You'd need to be charging at least $600 just to break even. That's not top end taxidermy, just middle of the road work at best. It's going to be a tough sell. I would think tanned hoops would sell better?

Look online already....check out ebay etc...

If you can pre sell like others have said, do it. If you do a couple and cannot move them at the price you Need to be at then quit.

Are you planning to do the taxidermy work yourself?
If not, there is no way it will be a money maker; most likely a losing proposition.
Beaver are one of the more difficult and rather expensive small animals to mount.
The forms aren't cheap plus you have the additional cost of a synthetic tail.

Only mounted beaver I’ve ever seen was in the movie with Leslie Nielsen and Priscilla Presley. Google it.

Looks like they're being sold anywhere from 650-1,200. Just seeing what you all think, no I wouldn't do the taxidermy either.

^^^^^^
That would be encouraging if they are actually selling for that amount. Do you know if they're actually getting those prices, or is that just what they're listing them for?

The taxidermist I deal with has a large shop so has quite a few mounts hung on the walls, most with price tags. I remember this awesome Fisher mount he had and was priced at 750. Probably took five years but it finally sold. He sells many many tanned hides though.

Big fan of Leslie Neilsons comedy. I thought of that scene as soon as I read the OP.

There’s a guy not too far from me that mounts Bobcats, Lynx, and Wolves and sells them. I don’t know how much he gets for the cats, but the wolves he gets $3500.

I would do some serious research on the demand for this item (taxidermy mounted beaver) before proceeding. Seems to be it would be a money losing proposition!!! smile

There are other ways to make money on beaver besides the fur market and the taxidermy market. You just have to figure it out.

Good Luck.
