I am looking making hay sets, pipe dream sets, and others. I have been using fox hollow superstakes 18" with chain for 2 years now but the problem is pulling them out of the ground. I practically break my back doing it. I was thinking about switching over to cable but have heard many people saying they get a lot weaker over time as well as they are harder to bed the trap with. Does anyone recommend trying out something else? Maybe switching to cable or not using superstakes? I would like to make them myself and save some money. Thanks for your help!

Should I stick with the superstakes? They are pretty costly.

How do you use that, slide the chain in that notch then pry up?

I use the light weight berkshires with 18” of cable. We don’t have rocky soil. Mostly heavy sand wih clay mixed in

I double loop the chain as close to the ground as you can get. Pull back with foot assistance kind of like a rocking chair motion, and it is much easier than the other pullers that lift up with your legs and back. This summer I am going to weld a narrower plate over mine to grab the chain links tighter. This is made for stake heads so it is a wide gripping / lift surface. I have also learned what the maximum depth is needed for my soil conditions.

IMHO chain if you want to pull them and reuse them cable if you want cut them and leave them when u pull traps. Chains and welded S hooks will last forever cable wont. Get a good puller if your using chain. I started out with cable trying to save money, second year everything had chains.

Do you drive them in the hole 18 inches?Maybe try just driving them 10 to 12 inches. Most times I only drive mine about 9 to 10 inches deep. All depends on the soil. What kind of puller are you using? I drive them in about 14 to 15 inches but I don’t have a pulled just legs and arms.

Get a puller!
I use finned super stakes with cable but I’m changing to finned super stakes with chain. The finned super stakes have a second eye you can attach cable or chain to, use your puller on that loop and the stakes come out easier.
I’ve also heard of guys using an auger of some kind hooked to a battery operated drill and they drill a hole next to the stake, then pull it up.

I take a 6ft 2x4 and put a foot on the bottom for some surface area. wrapped chain around it about 2' from the bottom and found a stainless hook i have attached to the chain. put the hook in the loop of my cable stakes and most of the time i can use one hand to pull my stakes. When they are in hard ground i put the 2x4 on my shoulder and stand up, either it comes up or i pop off the stake end, either way it comes up. every time. I have a bad back so i cant really bow up on things like i used to. Be sure to build the puller with the 2" part of the 2x4 toward the ground and it wont break. If you build it with the wide side down the 2x4 will eventually break. the whole thing can be built with a saw and a drill for about $15 or less.

Here is the puller I build. It is a more upright puller, and much easier on the back. It still has the hook welded on the tube, as a third hook up point once you get the chain started with the chain slot on the bottom. So all you do is slide the chain into a slot your created then use leverage to pull out of the ground?

Go buy a conduit bender. I have an old bumper jack It pulls every thing. You can buy them on Ebay. Just do a goggle search.

Redneck trapper you need to be selling those along with your products that looks like an excellent puller. Mine is a version of yours only has a straight bar at the end that round angle could take a lot of stress out of the back work pulling the hard ones. PM me with a price if your willing to make one and its fairly reasonable.
I would love to know as well
