My fur buyer wants me to sell him my beaver castor. Problem is I've never messed with the stuff before. I have them all out but now what. Do i hang them to dry? Do i put them in the freezer or what.

ask him if he wants them dried or not.

if dried, make sure you get all the red membrane off then hang them where they are separted(not touching each other) to
let them dry.

if he wants them frozen or not dried, just freeze them whole. put them on something to where they won't stick to anything then after they freeze put them in a bag. i freeze each one separate then store them in a big freezer bag. this way if the buyer wants to dry a few at a time, they are not all stuck together.

Most castor buyers will want them semi-dry. To accomplish this best you can freeze them as you take them and then later deal with them all at once. I like to tie the opening shut with a piece of string and then hang them on a wire in the fur shed. After a day or two turn them around so that they don't dry sticking to each other or have a wet spot (it will rot and get maggots). Typically, in a heated fur shed with air circulation they are semi-dry in a week. No harm done to allow them to hang even two or three weeks...after that you're over-drying them. Castor has grades just like fur. What everybody wants are the well filled pods with juice on the inside and not leaking out. This is #1 grade.

For storage or shipping they should go in an onion sack so as not to taint.
