Just wanted to say hello and introduce myself. I am 62 and retired this year and used to trap muskrats, and coon in the 60's, 70's and 80's and then snared some coyotes and dabbled with beaver when I had time. But now I have time and love trapping beaver and snaring coyotes. Back in the days of working real hard trapping coon I would dye my traps and then dip them in future floor polish and it got harder than woodpecker lips and seemed to stay on a long time and protected the traps. Does the new speed dip or the water based version also give a hard coat or would the floor polish be good over the speed dip? What do you all like the best speed dip or water based dip?

I just bought MB 750 OS with laminated jaws and they are nice and much easier to set than my Sleepy creek 4 1/2 longsprings but the way the 750's came from the factory I had to lift the pan up by sticking a screw driver under it. I thought it was way to stiff. But with the notch in the dog and no creep or excess travel maybe you need a lot of resistance on the pan movement. In my mind an otter could have been doing backflips on it and only a 60 pound beaver could have fired it. I can't fine any information on the proper setup for beaver and maybe an otter with these. Please give me your thoughts and expertise. I can buy a commercial trap tension gauge if I need to. Thanks in advance for sharing your wisdom!

Great website, I will enjoy it alot!

Isn't there a bolt on the pan you can loosen to lower the tension? I set mine under ice for beaver and I set them light.

Yes, I loosened the tension up but since they were all that way from the factory I thought I might have been doing the wrong thing.

They're good folks. It seems to me I loosened the bolt and worked the pan up and down until it loosened up a bit and snugged up the tension to where I wanted it. They are stiff out of the box.

I do this as well, a little tweaking and they work great. This being said I am not the heavy duty beaver trapper Boco, Les, and others on here are.

I Love my MB750's. For Beaver.but Not the OS s fot Beaver...I use reg jaws and laminated. The OS with a tapered back foot will lose you some Beaver.

I like dipping or Spraying my Water traps in Rustoleum red/brown primer. Dipping them in the floor wax would be a Great addition. Ive done that with my OSS mole traps.

I' call MTP on pan tension IF you want! Or just test them out with loosening the screw some.

Ain't no need to call anybody. If you've loosened them up, you may want to retighten them a little. I run four pounds tension on a beaver trap. You can measure that with a milk jug and a stick. Fill the jug with two quarts of water. Hold the stick on the pan, set the jug on top of the stick, and see if the trap fires. Keep adjusting the bolt until you get it to release at that four pounds. If you want less tension use less water.
