My first impression is coyote.

My first impression was coyote since I thought the muzzle looks slim in relation to the head but it would not surprise me greatly if it did turn out to be a wolf since others have made observations that escaped me at first.

I'm just happy to be here! Today I'm as young as I'll ever be and and older than I've ever been before!

Wolf, and I base that on the appearance of the fur and the coloration, and head size relative to the body. There is a lot of long fur there and it's dense. You can bury your hand in it. You cant do that with a coyote.

Bctom... And Jacks saw what I saw when first looking at this photo. Others caught it too. Wolf.

A very broad forehead.
The rounded thick ear pointing at the camera.
The overall size of the head and muzzle.
And one more thing, the eye.

We are so heavy with wolves they are often seen out front on the lake, on the back logging roads, snow machine trails so we probably see them more than most in the country. Certainly they are a nuisance incidental catch too often. That is why I bring up the eye. To me there is something very different in wolfs eye than a coyote. Maybe it's just me. Maybe just size. Camera pics taken so close seem to high lite it at my bait stations.

This wolf to me also seems to have a heavy flank and leg, but I have the advantage of knowing that snow was plenty deep. I would put this wolf around 65lbs.

Here is another of our wolves, Disney has folks thinking they are all silver and beautiful but that's not correct. Only AK HOwler up in Alaska has the mother load on those. Thanks guys. Osky

It doesn't look like you have anymore snow than we do. About a foot in the woods here. Baker's dozen maybe, lol.

That was a last years pic Les. As for snow I'd say a good 20" on the ground.

The eye to head size is always a good indication. in their placement, size proportion.
Got on here a hour late for my twobits worth.

That shoulder hair must be 6 inches long so it was a Feb picture, sure was not a November

You nailed it North.. Feb is correct. Size of eyes is part of it but to me the coloring around the outer eye on wolves is more pronounced. Maybe like a gal wearing makeup and one not. Sorry ladies.

I didn't get in on the guessing game but shorter stub nose and large forehead would of made me say wuff.

I want to say an old male coyote. I caught one last year that had the same color. Redish back of ears, tri-color fur.

Thanks for the thread. Folks need to look at a wolf once in a while, you know, so a positive ID can be made, lol.

Looking at the saplings in the close background, They look like blades of grass compared to this animal. If it is a coyote, he weighs 80-100 pounds.

If the warden is asking, I say it's a coyote!
