There was a gal here in Minnesota that attempted to hang a young child and got probation. I will never understand our legal system.

Here's what mid-April looks like. Look at the snow. We were anxious to get bear hunting but we were a month too early.

Now MAYBE there were marks to show where she had been in and out but.....in my experience , mid-April iis a bit early for black bears to be out.

There is a hatchery on that island and tons of blackies all over the shoreline so I guess it's possible that it was just a random encounter.................but I think they KNEW where the den was

Interesting hearing more detail on the area. Our bears here start popping out mid April the sows with Cubs tend to sleep longer and stay near the den longer. I would imagine up in your country they would have to sleep longer.
There have been a few instances I know of where hunters here shot sows that have first year Cubs during our fall season. Rare but it happens the sow comes to bait ahead of her cubs. I believe if those hunters had patience, why would the sow leave the bait, the Cubs would certainly have come in. I do know those Cubs making it to September as they did will make the winter just fine. I know of road killed sows who's first year Cubs made it as well. I do believe there is a good chance the Cubs will be stunted, I saw it in two of them. There is a chance however that was genetic.
Sad deal to read of these bums but it seems really odd, were they harvesting organs to sell?

The area they were is is a much milder climate than I am in.......so it's possible the bear had been a bit active but still going back to the den.

But why go all that distance just to go skiing ? They could have skied right where they live .

Boy oh boy, the more a guy learns about this fiasco the less sense it makes.

The mountainous pic is of the Alaska Peninsula during a May brown bear hunt. The one with the grizzly is a late April/early May interior hunt. I think grizzly/brown bear emerge earlier than black bear and boars tend to come out earlier than sows.

In my recollection, I've seen cubs come into a bait ahead of the sow more often than not.

Yes, browns are usually out earlier than blacks

white17 I was wondering the same thing about them happening upon that bear den? Seeing them up on mountainsides is one thing but running across one in the woods is something else. Yes April is a bit early for black bears in PWS, Memorial weekend has always been a hot time for bear movement in PWS.

I think they should have been punished but think the sentence was a bit severe. Our legal system is all over the board when it comes to fish and wildlife violations.

I thought this case was much worse than the father son black bear one yet they didn't get convicted of much. https://www.theolympian.com/news/state/washington/article225171185.html

Then you have Fred Sims..... As far as I know nothing ever came of his massive violations. https://www.adn.com/alaska-news/article/guide-shot-moose-bait-bears-prosecutors-say/2010/05/14/

Yep ! i have seen black bear dens in the lowlands along the river. Pretty darn easy to never know anything was there.

Fred Sims was a real outlaw, Ron Hayes and a few others around that same time period were just as bad. I knew of one who actually fled the country although I can't recall his name at the moment.

Whoever the guy is that fled the country must have been pretty bad.
