Heard this morning that new MN Governor wants to legalize pot. Just got off the phone with a guy that said there is also a bill that would allow someone to only purchase one firearm per year. The catch is if you are a pot user, you wouldn't be able to purchase any firearm. Anybody else hear about this?

With the Minnesota Senate being in Republican control, it is doubtful either bill will pass. There are several bills being introduced regarding gun control, including a "red flag" law and background checks for ALL firearm transfers.

I will give former governor Dayton credit for not wanting to legalize recreational pot, just medicinal during his term. During his last term, republicans controlled the house and senate. So, any gun control bills weren't going anywhere either.

I hope it doesn't even get a vote. The last thing we need is more people buzzed, driving etc. Further dumbing down of America IMHO. I listened to testimony on the bill on public TV yesterday. I wasn't convinced in any way it would be good for Minnesota. One of the top Mn lawmakers told me last year it will not get past him, he had talked to lawmakers in Colorado and those lawmakers told him it was a huge mistake to legalize pot in Colorado.

Bad idea. Then they would have room in prison for pedophilels, rapists, and real criminals. Can't have that.

He could reappear, I think, if he wanted to. On another note, I haven't saw that the dope smokers are the most productive folks around, and legalizing it wont change that. It might swell the welfare rolls somehow.

I don't believe you can be addicted to marijuana. It is just an excuse and a big act to even claim that.

Yes, it makes a fella lazy, but there are worse crimes, and prisons are at 160% capacity. Or should I say State operated country clubs.

Legalizing pot....I am against it; but really don't have a strong opinion.

...I know there are a minute few people who benefit mentally and/or physically from marijuana usage. I have zero problem with them using it medicinally.
The reason it is illegal is the same reason there is a "do not operate heavy machinery" warning on prescription narcotics. It is because it impairs one's ability to react normally in everyday situations in any standard society.
And yes, I would be fine to make alcohol illegal unless it is used medicinally.
No offense intended and not picking a fight. JMHO. And then there are people like bowhunter27295 that never could figure out the history lesson from Prohibition. I'm not picking a fight, either. I just think, based upon my experience, that people make better decisions on their own, than what they are offered by Big Brother.

Also the governor has come out in favor and there was a bill introduced in the Senate although it's dead in the water, at least for this session.

If the Gov't would get the **** out of the way, smokin weed wouldn't be an issue. But the way they are involved is turning it into the libtard nation. And I will say this, like everything else, the younger generation can't handle weed and work and being a productive member of society. They are, hey big Gov, handle everything while I stay down here in my Mama's basement type, and letting go of freedom. Stupid!
I wonder if tap dancers walk into a room, look at the floor, and think, I'd tap that. I wonder about things.....

Weed has been illegal for decades, yet any 13 yr old kid can find it if he wants it, so may as well legalize it and tax it. BUT, meth is the same thing...anybody can get it, but it's Satan's drug. That stuff is horrible.

I've heard it said before that having weed available only medicinally creates a situation where the only available weed is super strong stuff, akin to hard liquor, whereas a free market creates more of a market for lower-potency stuff, akin to beer. Some people just wanna be able to smoke a joint and only get a little high, and relax Not everybody wants to take a trip to the moon from one hit off the bong. Just food for thought.

I use to be a die hard right wing Christian to the max. After stressing, banging my head against the wall, and seeing no change I decided to be a live and let live libertarian. I hate drugs, abortion, and welfare, but nothing is and will be done about any of those things, no Republican or Democrat has changed it. So I go along with the principle if what you do doesn't violate my rights or freedom go for it and answer to your God at a later date. The problem with all this stuff is there's too many what if's when it comes to drugs it's not like alcohol. It stays with you way much longer. To hard to accurately test and most jobs will not allow it regardless.

I'm with ya Pat, I have no time for the crap, but I don't care what anyone does in their home.
Friedman said it best and I'm paraphrasing here, prohibition benefits the government, those involved in the court systems and the cartels the most.

Will teachers be allowed to do a doobie at lunch? Are they allowed to drink alcohol at lunch? Just because the gubbiment says something is illegal doesn't mean your employer can't ban it. I suppose if it's deemed medicinal and the individual has a prescription they could use it. Don't see how it would be any worse than the opioid painkillers that are being prescribed.

Ummm ,did you happen to notice that there are now 10 legal states and 13 that decriminalized it ? in like the last 5 years. That didn't happen by itself. So yea movers and shakers. At this rate they could form a political party and do pretty good. So when do you suppose the drunks will organize and rise up against the government ?

I'm with ya Pat, I have no time for the crap, but I don't care what anyone does in their home.
Friedman said it best and I'm paraphrasing here, prohibition benefits the government, those involved in the court systems and the cartels the most.
The war on drugs is an integral part of the welfare state. Legalization benefits the government via taxation and the resulting wealth redistribution. Politicians want more tax money any way they can. It helps to buy votes. Because of prohibition, how many people are employed in the prison system, various law enforcement agencies, lawyers, judges, social workers, probation officers and on and on and on. Prohibition benefits the swamp that is the government way more they, just tax you, I and everyone else to pay for it. At least if it were legal they could tax those that make the choice to use it pay for any negative impacts it may have and let you and I keep our money.

Legalize it, and tax it. Just because it's legal non users will not become pot heads.
I personally never have used or have any interest in pot. I also have never cared if people want to use it. I have no problem with what people do in their own home. But to think an inebriated person will make logical decisions and know they must stay at home is to ignore reality. To think that prohibition will stop them from doing it and then leaving their own home is an even bigger ignorance of reality, they are already doing it. You are trying to legislate safety over freedom. As a non user of alcohol or any mind altering substance, I'll take freedom.

Heard this morning that new MN Governor wants to legalize pot. Just got off the phone with a guy that said there is also a bill that would allow someone to only purchase one firearm per year. The catch is if you are a pot user, you wouldn't be able to purchase any firearm. Anybody else hear about this? I wish politicians would work on projects that will actually produce real results for the voters other than trying to be as politically correct as they can. We have completely legalized pot here in Colorado and it didn't produce nearly the tax revenue projected, I think because it's an all cash business, and pot shop owners ,and weed bar owners decide to keep the unreported cash. It also pretty much de-motivates workers when they are stoned A LOT, and you have to watch out for the driver that's doing 25 mph in a 60 mph zone. 2nd issue, what will allowing a one gun a year quota do to reduce crime? At all? This Governor has no ability for critical thought. He's only pandering to his base.

Bad idea. Then they would have room in prison for pedophilels, rapists, and real criminals. Can't have that. Its pretty much already legal here. Nobody doing any time for weed here. I know a cop who legally caught a guy with 253lbs of weed. Prosecutor said " Yep good grab... but meh, it's only weed". No charges filed. Walk around any of the big downtowns bus stops or sidewalks. The weed smell with choke you at times. Zero consequences as is. The cops have even been ordered by the Weed proponent major not to arrest the black kids selling it on the street corner. Sided with by the County attorney. Its a liberal state run by super duper liberal cities (Minneapolis/St paul), where anything goes. Kinda like the Star Wars Cantina.

Willie Nelson and snoop dogg moving to Minnesota! I hope not. They might feel comfortable in the confines of a city, but not up here, 400 miles north on the Canadian border. It would be interesting to put them both in the same fishhouse for a while though, or let them just fish out in the open like when I grew up.

I think Dayton wason way more than Pot!! And you would be right according to one of his aides when Dayton was a senator. He claimed Dayton had to have his "meds" prior to making a speech. Dayton once complained, that the republicans criticized him because he took medication for depression sometimes.

I posted this to emphasize the contradictory nature of this in the elimination of your ability to purchase a gun if you are a pot user. In other words, it's OK to smoke pot, but not if you want to purchase a gun. Huh??
But, it seems to have progressed to a debate on whether it's harmful to smoke pot or has any ill effects on its usage. That wasn't my intent even though I have strong feelings on the subject. I will only say what I was once told by a person who works with people addicted to drugs: He said, "Not all pot smokers are heroin users. But, all heroin users were once pot smokers."

So you honestly don't think more people will use pot when it is legal?
I will take freedom also but not at the expense of my own family's peril based on someone's choices who is high. There will be a few more who try it. But there are so many people who are regular users now. Honestly there are more people who are addicted to legal pain killers, and the meth heads are everywhere. There is way more issues with alcohol than pot - I can't remember the last time a pot head killed someone driving around high.

All you hypocrites are going to have to just suck it up and get used to it. legalization is coming whether you like it or not. Its the people that are putting up the ballet initiatives ,not the politicians. Its not about the money. Its about returning personal freedom that should of never been taken away. In fact it should come with an apology from the government for ruining so many lives for nothing.
I am amazed that so many people on here support more government intrusion in our lives.
Oh, and I am sure all heroine addicts drank a beer too. So there's your gateway drug. lol
Nice that you think you're smarter than a professional counselor. Did you go to school for that or just learn it on your own? 3 weeks ago, I buried my daughter who was a heavy pot smoker. The tox report isn't back yet, but the forensic examiner suspects it will show she was into hard core drugs of some kind. BTW, she didn't like beer so that probably wasn't her gateway drug.

Yukon. Anyone that's worked for the govt, around politicians (20 years here) knows it's never about right or wrong or personal freedoms (even though they like to disguise such) its ALWAYS about the money. Filthy/greedy buggers just can't seem to get enough of it. The sure wouldn't push to legalize it if they were fixing to make a boatload of cash off it.
Sorry to hear that Trapper7. It makes me sick to know that politicians don't give two turds about your girl as long as they can make some quick/fat cash. But that's how they operate.
Personally I could care less if its legalized at my age. As stated previously, its about as close to legalized right now here. Effects me zero, but it sure will effect some of our young ones.
Everything comes with a cost.

I agree that none of it good for us, but so are high fat diets, too much red meat. sugar, salt..........everything in moderation. It's up to adults to choose and suffer the consequences for overdoing things. My parents taught me how I should live. It's up to me to take care of my self now-I don't need big brother. No maybe you don’t. I have never heard of teens goading each other to try too much fat or salt, or that being a hazard to anyone but the individual. You or anyone else driving along with a big sweet candy bar or having just eaten too much steak aren’t a threat to anyone but yourself. So be it. Nothing good. All about freedom handing liquor to Indians, they free to make a choice as well. It sure has worked out well for them. Osky

I'm not sure about that....I spent a long week out and when I hit pavement the first place I stopped at was all you can eat steak buffet. I sat down, had a glass of water and ate enough steak that I thought I was going to pass out. I left but pulled over at the next establishment and took a nap. I was steak drunk and it was glorious.

Only thing I’d take exception to is it’s “ not much different from alcohol “. Alcohol is waaaay different. It’s like weed’s PO’ed ,trailer trash ,distant cousin that everyone hopes won’t make it to the Fourth of July bash cause he always acts like an ***hole .

They tried alcohol prohibition and it failed, because people wanted it and were going to have it. Weed is no different. It's prohibited, yet anybody can get it. Why waste the money fighting it? The war is lost.

Lots of bong water drownings and people choking on their Yoohoo's and nachos. It's epidemic.
However, Prohibition failed to curtail a drug that kills everyday. In fact !!...one of the few where withdrawal can be fatal.

When it is legal it will be taken to college parties just like a case of beer or a fifth of liquor. I am sure people who have never drank in high school never drank at college parties. Only once it's legal eh? Mike

"All the world will be potheads once it's legalized" is the EXACT same argument as " if we allow Constitutional Carry it'll be like the Wild West". Zero difference.

After living in the legalize mary Jane experiment in Canada now for a while, I can tell you that the fact it is legal now has been totally inconsequential.
The town I live in has always been huge for pot smoking. It still is. I still don't, and people who don't want to smoke it still don't smoke it either. The law mattered little here. It has free up the courts and police from busting those dangerous pot smokers!!
Pot affects the brain in far different ways than alcohol. The fact that alcohol is legal and pot wasn't always killed me. I have worked on crews where guys have smoked on breaks, and walked elevated beams, worked in rafters, and used all manner of power equipment with zero issues. Those same people would never drink on the job because they would lose life or limb really fast. Plus no one ever gets high on pot and beats up their wife, crashes a car, or passes out and dies choking on their own vomit...no, that's all thanks to alcohol...legal alcohol.
Long term use (like twenty years) has a habit of making people very moody and cranky at times. It also isn't particularly motivating. Tough to tell though if pot makes people lazy, or if lazy people do pot. I defy anyone to tell me they know for a fact it is cause and effect
I don't smoke, and never will, and like has been said I don't hold people who smoke a lot it particularly high regard. I don't drink either, and never will despite it being legal. Who cares. You don't like pot? Don't smoke it. You don't like guns? Don't buy one...same theory. The last thing I want is my government using my tax dollars to prosecute people for something so unimportant when there are important issues going by the wayside.
I would also think that in a country where fetal humans are being slaughtered among other issues, legal marijuana wouldn't even be on anyone's radar.

Heard this morning that new MN Governor wants to legalize pot. Just got off the phone with a guy that said there is also a bill that would allow someone to only purchase one firearm per year. The catch is if you are a pot user, you wouldn't be able to purchase any firearm. Anybody else hear about this? I am not saying this is a plot to have a docile, stoned ,unarmed, electorate. but I am saying that if there was a conspiracy to have a docile , stoned , unarmed electorate I couldn't tell the difference between this and that conspiracy. I will say that anything that prohibits a person from being armed should also prohibit them from voting.
America only has one issue, we have a Responsibility crisis and everything else stems from it.

I think a lot of people on here are smoking it. Yeah let's make it easier for kids to get it, that will improve the quality of the next generation.
Right now I’m having amnesia and déjà vu at the same time. I think I’ve forgotten this before.

Funny how folks get fightin mad just at the discussion about weed, without knowing a thing about it. I'm concerned if weed is legalized, and I have a concealed carry permit..........will I be allowed to buy weed?

Gary Benson You will be able to buy weed, but not guns. You can not buy a gun legally if you smoke weed. I am guessing to save the country they will take your guns if you smoke weed. So do you want to smoke weed or own guns? They are hoping everyone goes for the weed.

Gary, there is quite a bit of evidence that CBD oil is effective in treating seizures and is pretty much side effect free. My son is epileptic and after seeing what some of those anti seizure d rugs can do to a person, I'd say the heck with and try the CBD route at my age.
