OK Willy, I need to change my vote now. Bobby Gentry. Pretty as a picture. The voice. The delivery of the song. The guitar playing. The song she wrote. That lyrics and their arrangement in that song are absolutely perfect.
Remember Lynn Anderson? Saw her in a small theatre shortly after this song became a big hit for her. When she was signing autographs she seemed incredibly sweet and delicate. Somebody did or said something that must have scared her and the autograph session ended quickly. Unfortunately, there was almost no security in those days for country performers.
Carrie Underwood looks like she could be Lynn’s daughter.
Chama - thanks for posting that last video. Never knew who sings but have heard it many times. Good singer - she looks really young. The pace of that song with the hesitant pauses really makes it work great with those lyrics. I heard a songwriter say that the most important part of a song is the silence between the notes. Definitely not overplayed. Maybe that is what he meant. It has the possibility be around a long time.
Im pretty sure you saw that in the movie Eddy and the Cruisers. When they brought in a new song writer to fix Betty Lou has a new pair of shoes. Great movie part two had a dumb premise but still turned out to be a good movie also .
Muskrat411 - I never saw the movies that you reference. I read that reference in a book about songwriting construction. Like everything else songwriting - both lyrics and music have patterns, methods, and standard structures. Starting with basic form is a good idea and then working to make it original and unique. The crazy part is that my guitar has the same notes as Eric Clapton’s guitar. Mine never work like his.
5 seconds of Nicki made my eyes hurt. Never seen such a nightmare.
Chama - nice video, but in reality that gal wouldn’t give that guy a second look. She certainly wouldn’t notice me either. She would probably chase after Muskrat411 or The Beaver.
