My son says salt-sand mix. I don't mind because he's the one who cleans it up after the season, and because it's conveniently accessible for us like many others in large quantities.

This is the young man who does a lot of the work around the house when mother nature decides to stop in. Very persistent high speed young man. Keeps asking for a raise when it comes time to pay out chore earnings for the week though. He wants an expensive high powered air rifle and is slowly working his way up to the price tag.

He's got it all under control -I love his safety Vest!

I think all salts are corrosive but I prefer a mix with Magnesium Chloride in it- IMO, it's easier on the driveway and landscape. I think the brand I use is Safe Salt (not sure).

Our town gives away the same sand/salt we use on the road. Must be a resident and NO commercial use.

I have a long, steep, gravel driveway. Salt is a big no-no. Learned that the hard way. I head down to the township house and load up on cinders. Just a sprinkle on a sheet of ice and we can drive right up without spinning a tire. It also melts ice and snow with just a little sunlight on it.

Just sand when it is below 20 degree and add salt with it starts to warm up. Salt melts the ice and snow and can make a mess if not removed. JMO

10% calcium Chloride mixed with clean sand is awesome, the key just use a little, not so much as it starts the melting process

I have found that sprinkling Wood Ash from the Stove/Heater will provide a slightly gritty traction surface, and the dark color will soak up the sun, and melt it all a lot faster. When it finally washes off, it's fertilizer (potash), and will help the lawn.

Salt will destroy the base of a gravel driveway and basically create a mudpit. Seen it in a lot of spots.
