Pennsylvania: Senate Committee Passes Sunday Hunting Ban Repeal

Today, the Senate Game and Fisheries Committee passed pro-hunting legislation, Senate Bill 147, by an 8 to 3 vote. SB 147 now heads to the Senate floor for further consideration. Please contact your state Senator and strongly urge them to SUPPORT Senate Bill 147 when it comes up for a vote.
Senate Bill 147, sponsored by Senator Daniel Laughlin, would expand hunting opportunities for Pennsylvania hunters by eliminating the prohibition against hunting on Sundays. Prohibitions on Sunday hunting are old blue laws left on the books in just a few states. They deny hunters access one day per week despite the fact that each year, hunters pump millions of dollars into habitat restoration and conservation through Pittman-Robertson funds.
Many hunters are prevented from introducing their children or friends to hunting because they are competing against organized sports and other activities on Saturday, which is currently their only opportunity to hunt outside of the work or school week. Countless hunters stop hunting because of the lack of opportunity, both in time and accessible land. The addition of an extra day in the field, especially on the weekend, increases the opportunity to enjoy our hunting heritage. Allowing hunting on Sundays will invigorate essential hunter recruitment and retention efforts.

IMO the part of" hunting competing against organized sports and other activities on Saturday" and also includes Sunday already. Thru the fall and winter in my area the kids are playing field hockey, soccer, football, basketball and in the spring soccer again, baseball etc., so if hunting is added to Sunday are the kids going to stop playing the other sports, so they can go hunting, or our the kids being used as a pawn to get Sunday hunting. I don't care one way or another as I have hunted Sundays when out of state, so if one wants to hunt on Sunday if it comes to be is up to each hunter.

But it will come down to the PGC, to say what will be hunted on Sundays, even if the blue law is repelled.

I'm for anything that adds more opportunities,.

Having a young kid, I think it's great. My boy always asks why we can't hunt Sunday on his day off from school.

That being said, I'm not holding my breath... I'll turn blue and die.

Another way of looking at it is a day of rest was meant for not only people, but for animals too. Was it such a bad thing to give animals hunted for 6 days a week, a day to recover and feed, as winter came on?
I remember at age 16 I was going to go out hunting pheasants on a December day, because I loved watching my dog work. It was not about hunting, but I would have brought hom a few birds. My old man stopped me short with, "No the birds have been hunted enough." As a kid that never occurred to me. I never forgot that lesson in common sense and maybe before everyone chucks God to the sidelines as they have better things to do than that, there should be the question in this, should the animals have a respite from being hunted even if people no longer think that recuperating from life is anything this heart attack and cancer generation is rushing toward.

Using kids as a pawn for this is ridiculous. There are so many opportunities for children to hunt in Pennsylvania now. There is a special rifle hunt for deer early in the season when it's warmer. There is a mentored youth program. They have special pheasant hunts. You can take a kid hunting throughout the year for something or the other.
My friends, my family, as well as my wife and I enjoy other aspects of the outdoors, like hiking and walking our dogs. It's nice to not dress from head to toe in orange one day a week. An orange vest on dogs just doesn't seem like enough with all the if it's "Brown it's down" people around. It gives us, as well as other outdoor users, a reprieve one day a week.
I raised three kids without all the mentored hunts etc., etc. Through a crazy work schedule I found time to take them hunting and enjoy the outdoors . They all hunt and respect the outdoors to this day.
As much as I'd love to hunt all weekend (especially in archery season) I don't agree with Sunday hunting. Working all week you can still find times to hunt if you really want to. Kids have plenty of time off school anymore that a person could coordinate a vacation day or plan some evening hunts.
I agree totally with White Marlin- it's nice to have a day you don't need to worry about someone pulling a gun up at the sight of movement.

I was born and raised in the Keystone state before moving west so this is something I've been keeping my eyes on. I've been saying for years that PA should allow Sunday hunting for just 2 Sundays of the year, they would open deer hunting from 2 days in the season to 4-5 for many of the hard-working people of PA who can't take time off from work to hunt during the week.

Consider the following:
1. Regular Monday opener then have Sat & Sun the 1st and 2nd weekends. End on the second Sunday. That's 4 weekend days, doubling what there is now.
2. Open Saturday after Thanksgiving instead of Monday. You get Sat & Sun opening weekend, Sat & Sun 1st weekend, then end on the Saturday. That's 5 weekend days for hunting.

I think there are plenty of people in PA who can't take time off during the week to go hunting or take their children hunting. Everyone knows those 2 Saturdays are tough hunting with the Orange Army marching through the SGL's. Opening up Sunday hunting for just those two days could bring back a lot of people who used to hunt but haven't been hunting lately. I read an article recently from the head of the PGC who cited that for every 100 PA hunters who stop hunting each year only 65 start hunting. That's a net loss that is scary in a state that has a very long and proud history of hunting.

I'm glad to hear from ya'll in PA. Even the ones opposed. This topic is important and should have a healthy debate. I know it doesn't mean a whole lot to me since I'm living 1800 miles away, but I can say that being able to hunt on Sundays makes me think about making the trip back to PA to hunt with family again. Flying halfway across the country to have to sit out a day isn't very inviting.

Not a fan, will result in more posted ground. Agree with star flakes and white marlin. Those that say they will take the kids are fooling themselves. If you can’t find time before, Sunday ain’t going make any difference! Just my .02. Just another stupid stunt by the PGC.

Isn't trapping a form of hunting or don't you carry guns

Land owners can give permisson to hunt except on sudnay if they choose. Its their property

Trapping is very secretive and very low impact. Probably ain't but 5,000 to 10,000 of us out there at a given time. Compared to 800,000 to 900,000 in deer season. Trappers, for the most part, seem to respect land owners much more. To some extent I see your point but it would be tough to pull your traps every Saturday night.
