l was boarding this coon tonight and noticed these black spots in the leather is it where it's just not prime ? It was a sow caught in the first of January. Could it be she just had a late litter and didn't prime out .

Boars like to really grab on when they're giving it to the sows. When you take it off the board dig your fingers down into the fur in those two areas.

It will grade damaged. I-II would be my guess or a II if it slips when dry. It could be a rub but if you feel it on the fur side it will be a problem with the grade. LLL

It's hard to tell what caused those marks. Could be just a dark spot and the fur hasn't been compromised. Most damage caused by breeding occurs up around the neck area. And since It's a sow there are times when they never completely prime up.
NIce job on the put up.

Those marks indicate a problem on the fur side of the pelt.Who knows what caused the damage-could be any number of causes.

Just look at the fur and get back to us. If those spots are completely covered and you can't pull fur you should be good to go.
but It's going to draw the attention of the grader.

I didn't notice anything wrong on the fur side when I was brushing it out before fleshing it . But when I fleshed it and the fat was coming off in those spots is when I seen it .

If it is black, it is a defect and will be downgraded. Might grade SDA?

Caught a female earlier this week that had visual signs of being in heat.

Have you taken it off the board yet? I am curious if the fur was good. Can you feel any rough area on the leather that is on the fur side? LLL

Curious myself. I'm guessing that the fur side is scabby in that area, probably from ticks. Those dark spots in the leather usually mean a lack of fur, or leather damage, or both. Feeling around on the fur side should reveal the cause.

What you would probably see is real short bristly black hair growing in that area. It will not have any underfur. It will be almost impossible to feel the defect if it is up passed the window. Possible you won't be able to even see the defect unless you have a trained eye to spot the defect. If the coon was in my shop to be sold, I would down grade it. It could be down graded to a section III pelt and that would mean a low end coon.

You'll be able to see the fur in the window when you take it off. I've been told that if the fur is good in those areas, the spotting is simply birth marks. Kind of like freckles I guess.
