going to keep a couple coyotes over the summer to collect urine. whats the best way to preserve and freeze proof it?

Keep your collection process clean and filter your urine after collection you wont need to preserve it.

Keep your water cans outside the pen and not over the collection area,
keep the bloody meats to a minimum and keep your drain pan and trough cleaned daily.
Keep some shallow screens along the drain bottoms to catch droppings and other debris.

A pint of glycerin per gallon will be most adequate for antifreeze if you feel you need it.

thanks for the info. How long will it keep? It was -12 this morning and about 0 now so im sure ill need antifreeze

if your collecting for yourself one coyote will produce a gallon in about two weeks. I like to feed whole rabbits. feed half the rabbit, frozen. coyote will stay a little hungry and eat it right up. no contaminates in your pee that way cause it stays solid. chop them in half with an axe. if it gets to smelling like sewer water you need to quit collecting till first of November or later.

If you are storing it all outdoors without any heat then you will have to be considerate or you may get cracked jugs in those temps. Leave the jugs only 3/4 full or less to allow for expansion and a loose cap.

I would try to keep the jugs or containers in above freezing temps if possible. I know there will be some odor bleed but it is a valuable material to waste any.

Good clean collected urine will last forever in a good glass container or a better quality plastic container. I have used good quality 5 gal buckets in the past when I was collecting a lot of urine. Again don't over fill the buckets allow for expansion if they begin to freeze.

You could buy a couple of those freeze proof electrical tapes that plug into an outlet and wrap around some buckets depending upon the volume you have and tape it on the sides. Several options are available at TSC stores for anti freezing stock tanks and buckets.

Summer urine isn't much good and will sour quickly. I found that out the hard way years ago. I only collected about 4-5 months a season.

thanks im planning on just keeping the coyotes for a couple months in the spring just for personal use. itll be stored in a cool basement

Read above about collection season. don't put it all in one container. then if you get that sewer smell it wont all be ruined.

In the first photo look in the background. That old freezer lid is the tray. The pen sits ontop of it. Pen floor is expanded metal and the frame is rebar. The corners match on the cage and tray so the pen is above the tray. I whacked the center of the tray with a hammer and drilled a hole in the dent. A glass cake pan I bought at a thrift store goes under the hole and gets emptied regular. I set the tray up on a brick under each corner. Tie the cage to the tray with tie wire. The bottom photo you can see a little cage attached to the big cage. This is for the water bucket. Animal can not tip it over and it extends past the tray so animal can not splash out any water into the collection tray. There is a hole just big enough for the coyotes head so it can get a drink.

Plastic would be lots better. I have to sand off rust every time I use it. Worth the effort though. Can get two coyotes in there or 3-4 fox. It goes in the garage so they have a little shelter

You’ll have hairy pee in the summer, it’s garbage anyway. You may need some partial sides depending on keeping male or female or where your cages sit.

believe it or not coyotes are kinda picky. road kill deer would be good or jackrabbits. go out and shoot prairie dogs. save muskrat carcasses. whatever you feed remember to freeze it and keep them on the hungry side. you want them to eat it all and eat fast. frozen nothing drips into the pee. coyotes and fox both got no problem eating frozen food. I collect feed before I pen anything up. don't mess with cats, squirrels, or coons. they will eat them but only if starved into it.

Thanks for the info might give it a try do they have to be kept in a very remote area or do they get acclimated to livestock or an or a dog coming by. Do they need shelter during the winter or do you bother keeping them over the winter. Thanks again for the information

Any critters kept over winter should have the option of shelter, may not use it much but I think a box should be available. I know that a fox or coon will use the box , can’t help but think a coyote will too .

I put the pen in the garage. if out of the wind and rain or snow they are fine. fur coats are warm. I think a dog box in a collection pen would be a real pain


danvee like was said earlier in this thread, winter is the only time its worth doing. winter collected needs no preservative. never goes bad. keep it in a hot shed or a freezer. don't matter. never goes bad.

Locklear has an interesting way of pasturizing urine on his video. Said he got it from the guys that handle large volumes of deer urine. Said it wouldn't change odor over time.

I don't know if i would agree with PASTEURIZING. That seems to be more for his conveyance then the users. I think taking clean urine and putting up in glass gets better with age. Especially in lure formulation.

He does it so it doesnt change over time especially in formulations. How would it be more convenient for him to put his urine through another process, sounds like more work for him. I haven't tried so I wont say yes or no about the process. I prefer the freshest odor on urine I can get.
