How do you monitor the PH in the hide? I have paper strips. Can I do it with those or do I need something else?

Strips are fine, though if your going to do a lot, you can get an electric device if your gonna do tons of hides.Make sure your strips can go down to 0-1 pH

But when you neutralize how do you know what the ph is inside the hide?

I've read lots of people say a timed neutralization bath isn't accurate because you don't know what the ph ends up being in the hide but I can't find an explanation of how they are checking.

Never in 12 years have I had problems pickling hides. You can leave in the pickle for a very long time if you watch the ph level. Usually after I shaved down, they only went back in the pickle bath for a couple more days. Not rocket science.

It's not the pickle I'm talking about. How do you neutralize after the hide and how do you know what PH you ended up at in the hide not the bath. I'm concerned with acid rot later on down the road.

If you really want to get precise, you can get pH indicator fluid you can apply to a false cut (doesn't go all the way through the hide) to check the hide pH.

Just use baking soda and water, use your ph strips to get a ph of 7-8. stir your pelts around for 4-5 minutes and rinse well.
