Has anybody ever trapped foxes or coyotes with conibear traps?

Bad Idea in the lower 48. Anything bigger than a 220 will be a public relations nightmare. We're in a battle right now to keep dry land 220's in Minnesota because of the dog issue. Although I've heard of the rare fox and coyote catch in 220's, it's pretty rare one will stick it's head in one anyway. Grays would be more likely than reds.

I agree bad idea. Swift fox are the only ones I know of caught with Coni’s consistently and safely in the open prairie

Bad idea. Too many things can go wrong.

What are the bodygrip laws in Virginia?

Here is the regulation I found.

It is unlawful to set above the ground any body gripping trap with a jaw spread in excess of 5 inches when using any bait, lure or scent. However, baited body-gripping traps with a jaw spread greater than 5 inches and up to 7 1/2 inches may be used within an enclosure with openings no greater than 60 square inches and the trap trigger recessed at least 12 inches from all openings (see diagram). Traps must be staked to prevent enclosures from turning over and may only be used on private lands with written permission of the landowner.

I've caught a few in 330's over the years. Just a fluke. They stuck their head in a wolverine set.

As others have said, it probably isn't a good idea in the states.

Some of my buddies in Sachs harbour put bait on the trigger of a 330 or 220 and stick one spring in the snow. The standing trap usually has an arctic fox within half hour. Reset and repeat through out the day. Coloured fox are not as easy but they do stick their head in a conibear sometimes. I’ve caught them in buckets with lots of spruce boughs for cover and also in grassy areas with lots of dry grass for cover. Always in white buckets now that I think about it. There’s a certain laundry soap that comes in the perfect size bucket for a 220. There’s more dependable ways to catch a fox though for sure.

Had some in bale stack coon coni sets and 220 buckets before but I set a LONG ways from any homes and on private land only. Like said not the way to go in most places just not a good idea.

Second conibear looks like a pup, I used 220's on fox that went down a hole while hunting years ago

To me the 2nd fox looks more like it got rained on quite a bit and then frozen after temps dropped.I believe that is what is making it look smaller. It could be smaller than the one in the first pic.But hard to tell being so wet and frozen.I bet once home unthawed, dried, and fluffy it looked way better.Just my .02

I used to do a fair bit of blind setting for coon using 220s in trails and would pick up a few every year but nowadays with the anti trapping climate it is just not worth it, like has been said there are way better traps out there that will do the job better and more efficiently without the chance on making headlines in some anti newspaper article

I've caught quite a few reds In 160 trail sets while coon trapping. But It wouldn't be my go to fox trap.

Caught one in a bucket set. Think it went in to get out of a terrible rainstorm.
